Jets Prepare to Wrap First Offseason Under Aaron Glenn with Mandatory Minicamp

First-Year HC Likes His Team's 'Sense of Urgency': "We're Working Our Butts Off to Get to Where We Need to Be'

Time flies in the NFL. And no one has to tell first-year head coach Aaron Glenn about that, with the Jets' full-squad minicamp, summer dark period, training camp and start to the regular season all coming up fairly rapidly on the horizon.

"This is the last week of OTAs," Glenn told reporters last week at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. "I actually said something to the players about this, just how quick this thing goes by and the sense of urgency of getting the discipline, details, and 'competes' at a level that we want it to be. And the players totally understand that."

Every player on the Jets' 90-man roster will get more of it beginning Monday. Glenn has noted this spring that attendance on some days of the offseason program has been "100 percent." Attendance should be perfect or nearly so again for the mandatory camp, where the NFL's offseason rules still apply but the veterans and rookies alike turn up the intensity just a little more in implementing the new schemes being taught by Glenn, OC Tanner Engstrand, DC Steve Wilks and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo.

Here is a dateline and some bullet points for Glenn's first full-squad camp:

■ Players will undergo physicals Monday but will not practice.

■ Practices will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

■ Two practices totaling 3½ hours on the field are allowed each day.

■ The second practice of the day is limited to walk-through activities.

■ Helmets but no pads other than protective elbow and knee pads will be worn during the no-live-contact drills.

■ Including work inside 1 Jets Drive, the camp can last 10 hours a day to a maximum of 24 hours over the three days.

Despite the offseason restrictions, the Jets' minicamp will be the next opportunity for teammates and coaches, reporters and fans to get the next glimpse of the returning vets as well as the new players the Jets have brought in through free agency and the draft.

No. 1 on many observers' lists will be QB Justin Fields and the progress he's been making running the offense.

"He has this quiet confidence about himself," Glenn said of his fifth-year signal-caller. "His influence with the guys out there, I think you can see it. He can galvanize a group of men. Obviously, he's a talented player and I'm happy that I have him as my quarterback because I think the sky's the limit for this player."

Besides Fields, there are multiple players and units to keep an eye on:

■ Now a seventh-year vet and a three-time Pro Bowl DL, Quinnen Williams returns to anchor a line that features Will McDonald IV and Jermaine Johnson, still working back from last season's Achilles injury, on the outside and a scramble to continue to establish roles on the inside alongside "Q".

■ Young standouts like WR Garrett Wilson and RB Breece Hall on offense and CB Sauce Gardnerand LB Jamien Sherwood and Quincy Williams get to show their familiarity with the new systems.

■ Free agents such as S Andre Cisco, CB Brandon Stephens, WR Josh Reynolds and C Josh Myers all have experience and will be competing for jobs and lending their leadership skills to the equation.

■ The offensive line will be in the camp spotlight. Olu Fashanu is moving in fulltime at LT, first-round rookie Armand Membou is competing for the RT position, and those potential bookends sandwich a youthful, productive interior featuring guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson while veterans Joe Tippmann and Myers will compete at center.

■ The Jets' 2025 Draft Class will also be on display, from Membou through TE Mason Taylor CB Azareye'h Thomas, WR Arian Smith, S Malachi Moore and Miami front-seven defenders Francisco Mauigoaand Tyler Baron.

■ Special teams will also be worth watching with both kicking positions wide open.

Once the minicamp concludes, the players will depart Friday and Glenn won't see them again until everyone returns for the first training camp under AG, who likes how the Green & White have responded.

"Each day we go out, man, we go out with a purpose, we don't waste the day, and the guys are on point," Glenn said. "We still have a ways to go and we understand that. But we're working our butts off to get to where we need to be."
