Jets-Giants Preseason Game Preview | 'The Plan Is the Plan'

Jets HC on QB1 Justin Fields: ‘He’s Progressing’

If Aaron Glenn had already made his mind up whether the Jets' starters play Saturday night against the Giants, he wasn't ready to disclose that information following the conclusion of the teams' joint practices.

"The plan is the plan," he said. "That's the plan."

After beginning preseason play with a 30-10 triumph over the Packers last Saturday, the Jets and the Giants battled twice this week in workouts conducted in Florham Park on Tuesday and then in the shadows of MetLife Stadium on Wednesday. While starting QB Justin Fields and the first-unit offense had solid production on the ground Wednesday, the Giants pass rush was as good as advertised.

"They're really good," Fields said. "They have speed on the outside with Brian [Burns] on the outside, and then of course Dex [NT Dexter Lawrence II], he's been a menace for some years now on the inside. I think they're really good. Abdul [Carter] is good, too, he can move around a lot as you can see. They were moving around to the second level."

Fields started and played 10 snaps last week against the ''Pack, finding success underneath in the pass game and racing in for a TD from 13 yards out to culminate a crisp opening possession.

"He's progressing," Glenn said of Fields this week. "He's progressing. That's what he's doing, he's being a quarterback. I know everybody wants to see the long ball, but he's progressing."

If Fields starts against the Giants, the Jets will benefit going through their gameday protocol in their home building -- albeit as visitors. Every snap for Fields is important as he continues to process OC Tanner Engstrand's system, communicate his protections with his offensive line and then work through his progressions. The NYG front has been a great test this week for a young, talented offensive line and the dual-threat QB.

"We get to compete against another team and their defense is elite," Fields said. "Their D-line is elite, so I think it's great work for our O-linemen and just competitive, of course being smart, but just competing against other guys, other teams, and seeing different looks that we might see during the season from other teams. It's great work for sure."

QB Adrian Martinez could get the bulk of the snaps for the Jets. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor recently had a minor arthroscopic procedure on this knee and the Jets are hopeful their backup is ready for Week 1. Rookie Brady Cook didn't take team reps Wednesday after having his ankle stepped on during Tuesday's session. Cook, though, is expected to play.

With the Giants rolling out a line that features Lawrence and veteran edges Bruns and Kayvon Thibodeaux plus the freaky Carter, the Jets already got in a good couple of days of competition. But Glenn may want to see Fields direct his unit in game action to complete the week.

"Just good work and a little more of a competitive atmosphere going against different people," said RB Breece Hall of the matchup. "It's good to just go against some more of your peers and get a different look, go against different body types, different people, and come together as a real team and be going against another opponent."

If the Jets elect to use their defensive starters, several regulars could be out of the lineup. DT Quinnen Williams (calf) and DL Jermaine Johnson (ramp up) won't suit up and the Jets could take a cautious approach with CB Sauce Gardner (calf soreness).

"We're just getting ready for the game at the end of the day," said MLB Jamien Sherwood. "I feel like as a whole, we just need reps in general. It's a new scheme, it's a new defense, new coaches. For us to perfect our craft, all it takes is reps. That's what we need most regardless of if it's in the game or it's at practice. If Coach wants us to go out there and get reps, we will. Obviously, the player within us wants to play, but you know we have 17 games, so it's about being smart and knowing what's best. Again, these practices have been very beneficial for us, and I feel like we've been getting better with our communication and with our execution. But again, that's all in Coach's hands."

Regardless of that decision or the outcome Saturday night, Glenn will stick to the plan with his team and his quarterback.

"Nothing changes with that guy, I'm just telling you right now," Glenn said of Fields. "He's always going to be Steady Eddie, and nothing takes him too high, nothing takes him too low. He just stays above board and continues to work. That's the good thing about him -- that's the trait that you don't see with a lot of people in general. But for a quarterback to have that trait, it is outstanding. It doesn't matter. Whatever happens, he's going to continue to work."

Last week in Green Bay, the Jets started Josh Myers at C and Joe Tippmann at LG. With John Simpson returning to practice this week, it will be interesting to see whom the Jets start at the pivot. … RB Isaiah Davis (ankle) didn't practice this week and rookie Donovan Edwards (9 carries for 42 yards vs. GB) could be third in the RB rotation against the Giants. … If Sauce Gardner (calf soreness) is out, Qwan'tez Stiggers could get the start across from Brandon Stephens.

While WR-KR Xavier Gipson is expected to make his preseason debut, Allen Lazard (shoulder) will remain on the sideline. … After missing most of spring workouts, second-year WR Malachi Corley lined up in 19 offensive plays (1 catch, 8 yards) and three special teams snaps against the Packers. "He's catching up to everything that we're doing and he's part of the rotation," HC Aaron Glenn said. " So, every day, he's working his [expletive] off to earn a job, like everybody else. … Veteran Nick Folk had a live leg Wednesday, nailing 5-of-5 field-goal attempts in a round that included in a 55-yard strike with room to spare. … The Jets had 10 penalties marked off for 91 yards against the Packers and Glenn said that was the only thing not on brand in Week 1 action.
