Loss Game Recap Thumb

Despite scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Jets fell short, losing 28-25 to the Dolphins in MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Green & White drop to 2-5.

The Dolphins scored on a 63-yard TD with under five minutes left to go up by 28-17, but the Jets were back within 3 points under than two minutes later. TE Mason Taylor caught his second jump-ball TD of the afternoon and was on the receiving end of the 2-point conversion after RB Isaiah Davis's 41-yard catch and run put the Jets in the red zone, cutting the deficit to 3 points.

With the ball back, Miami continuously ran it, draining the clock and forcing the Jets to use their timeouts. A successful rush on fourth-and-1 by QB Malik Willis with under two minutes to play allowed the Dolphins to run out the clock to end the game.

Rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr. recorded his second consecutive 100-plus yard game with 5 receptions for 115 yards and 1 TD. The Jets cut into the Dolphins' 14-point halftime lead with Cooper's 3-yard TD with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Three plays prior, QB Geno Smith found him 60 -yards deep down field to put the Jets at the Miami 10-yard line.

Smith was 23-of-30 passing for 287 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT.

The Dolphins were forced to punt rather than answer Cooper's score as edge Nate Lynn sacked Willis for a loss of 4 yards near midfield as the third quarter ended. The Jets got down to the 1-yard line with a series of consecutive explosive plays: a 19-yard reception by WR Garrett Wilson, 20- yards to Taylor and a 10-yard rush by Braelon Allen.

However, on third-and-goal, Dolphins' edge rusher Chop Robinson sacked Smith for a loss of 12, and Jason Sanders kicked a 33-yard field goal with 9 minutes left in the game. Sanders had missed from 40 yards earlier in the game on the Jets' first possession out of halftime.

Taylor scored his first two TDs of the season with his first on the Jets' opening drive and second late in the game, finishing with 5 receptions for 62 yards. Allen had his third consecutive game with over 100 scrimmage yards rushing for 104 and adding 30 on 6 receptions.

After a fiery first quarter, where the Jets and Dolphins traded opening drive TD scores, there was no scoring until Miami upped its lead to 14 with Willis scrambling to the left for a 2-yard TD seconds before halftime.

The Jets offense came out fiery and explosive, starting with Cooper's 52-yard reception on the Jets' first play of the game. The Green & White scored an opening drive TD for the second time this season when Taylor caught a 13-yard TD over the head of CB Jason Marshall Jr.

Conversions on third-and-long kept the Dolphins on the field. On their opening drive they scored a TD on third-and-10 with Willis finding Caleb Douglas 7 yards up the middle in the end zone. During their 14-play second sequence, which resulted in a 1-yard TD rush by RB Ollie Gordon, the Dolphins converted third-and-7 with an 11-yard pass to TE Greg Dulcich and later third-and-8 with Willis rushing for the first down himself.

The Jets' second possession was cut short with S Michael Taaffe intercepting a pass Smith intended for Taylor. The Dolphins took over on their own 13-yard line, but the defense forced a punt.

Miami controlled possession in the first half with a 15-play, 91-yard drive spanning nearly 9 minutes after it forced the Jets to punt. After Willis' punched in the score, there was only 6 seconds left before halftime.
