Geno Smith had his first preseason action of the summer and the Jets' first team defense played into the second quarter during their preseason 17-0 victory in Pittsburgh.
It was Smith's first appearance as a Jet in 9 years, 302 days. While he only played one series, Smith was perfect (7-of-7 passing, 65 yards), leading the Jets to an opening drive touchdown. With two defenders in his face, Smith rolled left and found TE Jelani Woods who ran into the end zone for the 13-yard score.
The Jets added to the lead in the fourth quarter when Jason Sanders converted on a 38-yard field-goal attempt and WR Quincy Skinner Jr. had a late TD catch.
At the start of the second quarter the Steelers were driving into the red zone but S Andre Cisco intercepted QB Will Howard's look to Roman Wilson at the Jets' 8-yard line.
The Jets forced Pittsburgh to punt on the two drives prior with a three-and-out and rookie David Bailey's sack on Howard for an 11-yard loss on third down.
Cade Klubnik led the offense for the rest of the first half and one drive in the third quarter going 10-of-14 passing for 75 yards, plus 16 more on the ground. His longest completion was to WR Malik McClain for 14 yards.
The rookie QB experienced his first in-game two-minute situation after CB Samuel Womack III intercepted Howard at the Jets' 23-yard-line. Klubnik was sacked twice over eight plays, but two third down connections to McClain allowed for a field goal try; however, Cade York's 59-yard attempt had the distance, but was wide right.

The Steelers swapped Howard (10-15, 75 yards) for rookie Drew Allar in the second half. The rookie QB connected deep to TE Lake McRee for 38 yards but Chase Wilson sacked him three plays later to limit the Steelers to a 44-yard field- goal try, which was wide left.
WR Junior Bergen, who signed with the Jets during the week leading up to the game, had the first first down of the half for the Jets on a 44-yard pick up off a screen pass from QB Bailey Zappe. The explosive play set up Sanders' fourth-quarter FG.
Allar was sacked three times — once by LB Chase Wilson and twice by edge Nate Lynn — and the Steelers punted four times.
Zappe went 6-of-8 passing for 65 yards during his shift and QB Brady Cook was 1 of 2 with a 31-yard touchdown to Skinner in the final two minutes.
