Justin Fields received his second consecutive summer start for the Jets and saw his play time double in nearly a full quarter of action against the Giants. With the Jets leaning on the ground game on their second drive, Fields led the offense to scoring territory and exited after Nick Folk's 38-yard field goal made it a 7-3 contest with 2:18 remaining the in the first quarter.
After the Jets picked up one first down on their opening possession, HC Aaron Glenn sent Fields and the starting offense back onto the field for a second drive. Trailing 7-0, the Jets had a bruising possession where they ran it 10 times and Fields passed only once. When Fields dropped back on a 1st-and-10 from the NYG 45, he saw some room and scrambled for 5 yards.
With the Jets facing a third-and-2 at the Giants' 20-yard line, Fields' only pass on the drive, intended for Garrett Wilson was incomplete. Braelon Allen converted two third downs to keep the drive alive including an 11-yard gain on 3rd-and 8. Wilson was targeted on three of Fields' five throws Saturday.
On the first play from scrimmage, Fields, who ran 13 yards for a TD last week at Green Bay, rolled out to his left and found rookie TE Mason Taylor for a 4-yard game. After another first-down run by Allen, Fields' next three passes, two intended for Wilson, were incomplete. Wilson was targeted on three of Fields' five throws Saturday.
In contrast to last week's game, Fields ran once during the Jets' first series against the Giants, for a 5-yard gain. Fields completed 1-of-5 passes for 4 yards and ran once for 5 yards. The Jets totaled 4 first downs with Fields at the helm and amassed 59 yards over 19 plays.
