The volume and intensity at the Jets' training camp has picked up, and HC Aaron Glenn said the reps will continue to increase as the team inches closer to the regular season. With the increased workload has come inevitable wear and tear, and Glenn shared with reporters Tuesday that several players are currently sidelined with injuries.

TE Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain) and QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) missed practice for the second consecutive day, while DL Byron Cowart (ankle), edge Will McDonald IV (back spasms) and rookie CB Azareye'h Thomas (shoulder) all left practice early.

"This is the dog days of camp, and listen -- it's not fun for anybody, but it's necessary," Glenn said. "Our guys went out there and got a good amount of reps today. And practice was built to be that way. We're going to continue to do that, because we've got to get our guys ready to play 65 or 70 plays a game. So, as we continue through training camp, you're going to see us progress as far as reps are concerned. Our guys know that. We're going to continue to fight and make sure we get ourselves calloused and ready for the first week."

For the second consecutive day, practice featured extensive team periods and plenty of live reps -- and Glenn said treating move-the-ball periods "like a true game" will be important.

"I believe in playing true football and getting our guys and our coordinators ready to call it like they see it," Glenn said of his philosophy. "So, it's not just for our players. Man, our players like doing that, but it's also for our play callers, too."

Defense Wins the Day
The first team period started with the offense backed up on its own 1-yard line, and the unit got off to a slow start. There were two offensive penalties called, and CB Brandon Stephens recorded a pass defense of a Justin Fields ball intended for WR Tyler Johnson.

QB Adrian Martinez took the next set of reps, and after handing the ball off to RB Braelon Allen twice, he fired a deep ball to WR Arian Smith who had broken free into space. Smith twisted around and found the ball but was ultimately unable to haul in the pass.

QB Brady Cook then stepped in and connected with WR Ontaria Wilson who made an impressive grab along the left sideline.

During the ensuing move-the-ball period, the run game continued to flash potential as RBs Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu found holes for big gains. The defense quickly found its footing, though, and the QBs saw consistent pressure up front and sticky coverage in the backfield throughout the day. DL Tyler Baron had would-be sacks of Fields and Martinez, and DL Rashad Weaver added a would-be sack of Fields. CB Michael Carter II had an impressive pass defense of a Fields pass intended for WR Garrett Wilson.

"Days like this -- a day that we didn't want to have -- it's a great opportunity to see how we are going to respond on Thursday," Fields said. "It's inevitable -- you're going to have these days in training camp. That's why we're out here. That's why we're out here working. And the defense, they won the day at the end of the day. So, like I said, it's about how we respond on Thursday, and we've got to come out hot."

Secondary Turns PDs Into INTs
Getting hands on the ball has been a point of emphasis throughout training camp, and the defensive backs made some extra noise during Tuesday's practice with three takeaways.

S Andre Cisco got the day started with a good read on a Justin Fields pass intended for RB Braelon Allen during a move-the-ball period. Later during 7-on-7 work, S Tony Adams got in on the action. Fields targeted WR Josh Reynolds but CB Sauce Gardner was there to break up the pass, and Adams caught the ball before it hit the turf. CB Brandon Stephens added one more takeaway during a move-the-ball period on a Fields pass that was too high for TE Jeremy Ruckert and deflected off his hands.

"Listen, those guys have been doing a hell of a job," said HC Aaron Glenn, who praised the play of Stephens, Gardner, Cisco, Adams and CB Michael Carter II. … "Even our backups, those guys are doing a really good job too. And it all comes down to that they understand what we are trying to do and what we're trying to accomplish. To me, I think that makes it easy for a defense in general for those guys to go out there and play fast."

Jetcetera
The Jets hosted several former players for Jets Legends Day, including Jason Fabini, Kevin Mawae and Ray Mickens -- all former teammates of HC Aaron Glenn.

"It gives me goosebumps to see him out there and to be the head coach," Mickens said of Glenn. "Going all the way back to college days when we played together at Texas A&M, and how he carried himself in college. Seeing him be a head coach now -- everything that he went through to get to where he's at right now -- has been nothing short of amazing."

Added Mawae: "It's awesome. … To see him rise the ranks from a scout to where he's at now -- I played against him three times in college, played four years together here at the Jets. To see his ascension into the head coaching ranks is pretty special."

Added Fabini: "He's a brother. We played together, we went through a lot. To see him succeed is awesome. He knows New York and he knows what it takes to win here and if he wins here, what's going to happen. So, I think that's awesome. And I think that's what we want as former players -- we want to see the team win."
