The Jets made it official Tuesday when CB Sauce Gardner signed his multi-year contract extension at the team's Atlantic Health Training Center.
Gardner, 24, is a two-time first-team All-Pro who has amassed 40 pass defenses and 181 tackles in three NFL seasons. He became the first cornerback in NFL history to receive first-team All-Pro honors in each of his first two seasons.
"We are pleased to agree on a contract extension with Sauce that will keep him with the Jets for the foreseeable future," said Jets general manager Darren Mougey. "On top of being an All-Pro cornerback, he is an exceptional teammate and a tremendous competitor who is all about winning. I want to acknowledge ownership – this would not be possible without their full support. As well, Sauce's agent, AJ Vaynerchuk of VaynerSports, and Nick Sabella, from our Football Administration department for all the hard work they put in to get this deal done."
After starting 15 games and totaling 49 tackles, 9 PDs and 1 interception in 2024, Gardner participated in voluntary workouts this spring and expressed his desire to be a Jet for the long-term.
"I just wanted to show my teammates, show the coaches, how much I'm bought into this," he said. "I want to win. I want to change the organization. I want to be a part of changing the organization. We got a new regime, AG (Head Coach Aaron Glenn), his whole coaching staff that he brought in, (General Manager Darren) Mougey, just great guys. I feel like Mr. Johnson did a great job of getting those type of guys to be here, and I feel like they're doing a great job and changing the culture, for sure."
Mougey, who was part of a Denver front office that hammered out an extension for Pro Bowl Patrick Surtain II last offseason, was asked at the NFL Combine about locking up his young talent.
"The to-do list," he said, "is to keep good young players on the team and to add good players."
The Jets drafted Gardner, a standout at Cincinnati, with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. He exploded onto the professional landscape, leading the league with 20 PDs and becoming the fifth Jet, the second Jets DB (besides S Erik McMillan in 1988) and the first Jets CB to be voted AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
In his sophomore pro campaign, Gardner amassed 11 PDs and 57 tackles while earning first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods for a second consecutive season. Out of the Jets' 51 games from 2022-24, Gardner has started all 48 contests he's lined up in.
