Upon further review ... Michael Vick is the one. No, not as in Neo. As in uniform No. 1.
Vick's jersey choice of No. 8 became official Thursday, but Friday, Vick tweeted that he didn't like the look of 8 and so he'll be going with uniform No. 1.
After trying on the #8 I decided that it's not the right fit for me. I'll be going with the #1 officially. Thank You #JetsNation — Mike Vick (@MikeVick) May 2, 2014
For Vick to get No. 1, punter Ryan Quigley had to give it up, which apparently he did. Early in the process, we heard Vick might ask Quigley about acquiring the number, but then the QB shifted his decision-making to Nos. 3 and 8, asking his Twitter followers to help him decide between the two last Sunday, then initially going with 8 early last week.
If No. 1 becomes official for Vick, he would become the seventh player to wear it in franchise history and the first quarterback. Before Quigley last year, the last player to wear No. 1 in the regular season was K Mike Nugent. The last non-kicker to wear No. 1 in a preseason game was WR Raymond Webber in 2012. The last non-K to wear it in the regular season was the first one, RB Mike Adamle.
Here are the six No. 1's in franchise regular-season history:
