Mackey's Back in Town

The New York Jets signed LB Jerry Mackey to the practice squad and released OL Mike Elgin from the practice squad. The announcement was made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Mackey (6'1", 233) returns to the Jets after he was traded to Tampa Bay on Aug. 21for an undisclosed draft pick, then was waived by the Buccaneers on Sept. 1. He originally signed with the Jets on Aug. 4.

Mackey played four years at Syracuse, recording 202 tackles (106 solo), three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. The Freeport, N.Y., native earned All-Nassau County and All-Long Island honors as a senior at Freeport High School and is a great-nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Mackey.

Elgin (6'4", 290) was signed by the Jets to the practice squad Sept. 5. He was selected in the seventh round (247th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by New England and was waived by the Patriots on Sept. 1. He was a three-year starter at Iowa who played both guard and center.
