On a picturesque summer morning in Florham Park on Wednesday, the Jets and first-year head coach Aaron Glenn got training camp underway with a 90-minute workout. While a Super Bowl victory is each NFL team's ultimate goal, Glenn wants his team to focus on the moment at hand.

"This is a one-day mentality for us," Glenn said.

Glenn, who is entering his 29th NFL camp (15 as a player, 2 as a scout and 12 as a coach), thought the Jets got off to a relatively clean start.

"Usually on the first day, that's where most of the mistakes happen and most of the penalties happen," he said. "I thought our guys did a really good job. Listen, we have a long way to go and we know that but today I thought was pretty good."

On the fifth play of the first team period of Camp Glenn, starting QB Justin Fields picked up with star WR Garrett Wilson where they left off in the spring. After delivering a play-action fake, Fields stepped up in the pocket and connected on a long-distance strike to Wilson. With room to spare, Wilson simply trucked up the right sideline and would have waltzed in for a 65-plus yard TD.

Fields, who joined the Jets in March, later went to Wilson again and the fourth-year wideout climbed the ladder for an impressive reception over CB Brandon Stephens. Fields recalled Wednesday hitting on similar plays at Ohio State back in 2019 when Wilson, then a freshman, stood out as soon as he took the field in Columbus.

"First couple of practices, he's dunking on dudes' heads. Crazy," Fields said. "It was kind of [like] the one we had today, a left-side go ball and he just jumped and [Randy] Mossed a dude. Right then and there, I knew he was different. Right out of the gate, he was making plays and of course ever since then he's been doing that."

One play prior to Wilson's would-be score, C Joe Tippmann helped clear a hole in the middle for his former Wisconsin teammate, RB Braelon Allen. Coordinator Tanner Engstrand threw a lot at his group in the spring and Tippman said the unit has started camp with a better understanding of the system.

"It's great," he said. "We really dove into it in OTAs but that was such a great thing because now we're able to kind of sit back, stat back again with install one. It's kind of like dialing everything back and then we're plugging it back in again. Recall has been great, just being able to sit down in that meeting and not kind of have the stress we had in OTAs because we put the work in."

The defense had its moments as well. LB Quincy Williams displayed great recognition after a short ball from Fields to RB Breece Hall. Jamien Sherwood, who followed up Williams' MVP Team season with one of his own, followed up the next snap with Micheal Clemons to cut off any space for Hall on the ground. Edge Will McDonald IV appeared to rack up a would-be sack of Fields in the Jets' second team period while nickel Michael Carter II exhibited great positioning over the middle to force a Fields incompletion on at attempt to Wilson.

"A lot of that time during OTAs, Phase 1 and Phase 2, getting into the playbook because it is different," Isaiah Oliver said. "A lot of defenses are similar over the NFL, but it's just like the terminology, the verbiage is different so that's kind of been the biggest thing for us, just kind of getting used to that and being able to play fast."

The Jets unveiled a new locker room on Tuesday, and the team also recently signed stars Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner to multi-year contract extensions. For HC Aaron Glenn, the milestones indicate an unwavering commitment to a culture rebuild.

"Let me say this first: it all starts with the owner," Glenn said. "None of this gets done without our owner. Listen, I get it, I understand things that were talked about or said back in the day, but I know what we are always trying to create. … [Chairman Woody Johnson] helps us be successful. We have to now win, we understand that. But the things he's done, the way he talks, the way he operates, I can't be happier to have him as an owner."

Rookie WR Arian Smith got free on a sideline route and hauled in a pass from veteran Tyrod Taylor. But during a 7-on-7 period, Sauce Gardner, who signed his multi-year extension Tuesday, broke quickly to prevent the rookie receiver from catching a pass from Justin FieldsBrandon Stephens applied strong pressure and batted down a Fields' pass during a team period. … DL Micheal Clemons had a strong opening practice with some penetration and a PD.

Working across the field, Xavier Gipson got the ball in space and found some room up the sideline. … Second-year WR Malachi Corley, who was limited in the spring due to injury, was a full participant. … Veteran DL Jermaine Johnson and WR Irvin Charles started camp on the Active/PUP list while rookie LB Boog Smith was removed from the Active/NFI list and OL Samuel Jacksonwas added to the roster. The Jets will return to practice Thursday morning and will hold their first public session Friday in Florham Park.
