HC Aaron Glenn on Both Units Responding: ‘You Want to See That’

During the Jets' Tuesday practice, the defense came ready to dominate.

"I thought the practice today was exactly what we talk about when it comes to man, some days the offense will have a great day, and other days the defense will have a great day," HC Aaron Glenn said. "There's always going to be this jockeying for position. And today, I thought the defense really stood out on what they came out to do. So, hats off to those guys."

Though Glenn said there were "highs and lows" during the session, he was encouraged by the defense's ability to bounce back after the offense "won" some recent practices.

"What I want to see is when you win, can you consistently continue to win? And when you lose, how do you come back and you get your win? And I thought our defense did a good job of that," he said.

Glenn specifically praised CB Brandon Stephens -- who often lines up across from WR Garrett Wilson -- DL Quinnen Williams, who "beat some one-on-one blocks" and the linebackers.

The defensive highlights included a pass defense by CB Isaiah Oliver of a Tyrod Taylor ball intended for WR Brandon Smith, a near pick by CB Qwan'tez Stiggers on a pass from Taylor intended for WR Quentin Skinner and a fumble recovery by CB Kris Boyd after RB Donovan Edwards lost the ball.

"I thought they were physical," Glenn said of the defense. "You saw a number of plays on the ball. I thought they understood exactly their coverage responsibilities for the most part. I think some of our interior guys did a really good job of winning their one-on-ones and getting around and getting close to the quarterback. So, there were a number of things that just stood out."

Offense Responds in Situational Period
Tuesday's practice concluded with a situational period. With 51 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the offense trailed by 6 with the ball on the +49-yard line.

Justin Fields got things started with a short completion to RB Breece Hall. After throwing incomplete to WR Garrett Wilson, he connected with the star receiver for a short gain on the next play. Then facing a fourth-and-3 with 26 seconds on the clock, Fields scrambled left to pick up the first down and get out of bounds. Fields connected with WR Allen Lazard for an 18-yard gain on the ensuing play before finding rookie TE Mason Taylor in the end zone for the score.

"Even though the defense had a really good day against our offense, you saw in that two-minute drill how the offense really picked it up," HC Aaron Glenn said. "And they actually got down there and got the score. You want to see that. Again, it just goes back to everything that I talk about with the guys. Things are going to happen in this game that you're not going to like, but how do you respond to that?"

Taylor has continued to show flashes of his potential as a rookie throughout camp, and the chemistry between him and Fields is growing.

"Mason -- he doesn't talk a lot," Fields said. "He does work a lot though. From the moment he got here, he's been working – [he has] his head down working. He doesn't make really any mental mistakes, at least from what I've seen. He's a great route runner, he's smooth [and] has natural hands. He's been great so far."

Though Glenn said the defense won the day, the resiliency by the offense was encouraging.

"I want our guys to understand that we can always win the game no matter what the situation is," Glenn said. "And that kind of proved the point -- our offense not having a good day, but then in the two-minute drill they went it in and drove for the score."

Jetcetera
QB Justin Fields said he is working his way back to 100 percent following last week's toe injury, and the quarterback was more mobile on Tuesday. During the first team period, Fields escaped pressure and scrambled right before looking downfield to TE Mason Taylor. Though Taylor was unable to haul in the pass, Fields, with added plastic protecting his toe, looked good on the move. … WR Ontaria Wilson made an impressive diving catch on a ball from Adrian Martinez. … RB Braelon Allen did not practice due to knee soreness. … After an off day Wednesday, the Jets will return to the practice field Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
