Jets HC Aaron Glenn: 'I'm Evaluating Everything'

Boss Adds: ‘We Got to Get Better in the Passing Game’

In a quirk of the NFL schedule, after their bye in Week 9 the Jets have played two games (Cleveland and New England) over five days ... and now have a mini-bye until visiting the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Nov. 23.

After Thursday night's 27-14 loss against the Patriots, HC Aaron Glenn on Friday said that he would take the time, over the weekend and into next week to elevate all aspects of the team's operation -- from the recent play of quarterback Justin Fields to the performance of the coaching staff.

"I'm evaluating everything," Glenn said in response to a reporter's specific question about possibly giving another start to Tyrod Taylor in place of Fields. "I'm evaluating myself, the players, schematics, coaches, I'm evaluating everything. So, I don't want to just place everything on that, that one situation [quarterback]. I'm just looking at everything, because as a head coach, that's my job, to make sure that I put this team in the best position to go win games."

After playing a strong game in the Jets' first victory of the season at Cincinnati on Oct. 26, Fields has thrown for fewer than 200 yards combined in the last two games. Against the Patriots, Fields led the team in rushing (67 yards on 11 carries) but was 15-of-26 passing for 116 yards with 1 TD (to newcomer John Metchie III).

Asked if he sees a potential change at quarterback as a move that could spark the offense, Glenn got right to the point.

"You hear that quite a bit when you get these quarterback changes, it is, 'Man, I'm trying to get a spark for the team,' "he said. "But to me it's more or less, I'm trying to make the best decision to give our guys a chance to win. Because to me, a spark is really a short-term deal. And I don't know if this is what other coaches' decisions are, but I want to make the decision to give us a chance to win. Then whatever that evaluation process is has come out to just know that the reason why I make decisions that I make is because it gives us the best chance to win."

Glenn did point out that several of Fields' passes were catchable and that the receivers have to do better. Metchie led the receiving corps with 3 catches on 3 targets for 45 yards and the 22-yard TD grab from Fields. The two tight ends, Mason Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert, each had 4 catches for a combined 53 yards. Another new wide receiver, Adonai Mitchell, had a single reception (on the game's opening drive that led to a score) on 6 targets.

"We got to get a lot better in the passing game," Glenn said. "I don't think that's any surprise to anybody. But when you look at that game again, I thought he [Fields] did some things. But he has to improve. There's some open guys that we missed.

"But, man, there were some passes in that game I thought that we had a chance to make some big plays on and we didn't finish, so it's a combination of both. I thought the protection was pretty good for the most part [Fields was sacked once for 2 yards], right? So now it's just in completing those passes. And the guys that have a chance to make those plays, they have to go out there and make those."
