Jets CB Reset: Trumaine Johnson Release Sets Corner in Motion

Reports Nickel CB Brian Poole Has Re-Signed; Starters Still Available on Roster, in Free Agency

The Jets still need to do some rebuilding down on the corner, but the process has already begun.

The Green & White released Trumaine Johnson, their big-ticket signing in 2018, after two low-impact seasons. And reports are that the team has re-signed nickel CB Brian Poole, described as "a pro's pro" by head coach Adam Gase late in his first season manning the Jets' slot.

What remains to do? Well, with nickel addressed, coordinator Gregg Williams and DBs coach Dennard Wilson still need two corner starters.

The starters could come from the four veteran holdovers on the roster, all of whom started at least one game for the Jets on the outside last year: Darryl Roberts (8 starts, plus 2 more at safety), Bless Austin (6 starts), Nate Hairston (6 starts) and Kyron Brown (1 start).

But there are other avenues to pick up starting candidates. Besides the draft, a number of other candidates are still available as either unrestricted or street free agents, such as Xavier Rhodes (salary-cap cut by the Vikings), Prince Amukamara (former Giants first-round pick in 2011 most recently with the Bears) and Logan Ryan (Rutgers grad late of the Titans who as a Patriot went 7-2 vs. the Jets and had a 79-yard INT-return TD as a rookie in a loss to the Jets in 2013).

Here is a reset of the Jets' cornerback position, listing all players currently on the roster plus players who have been reported by media outlets to have either signed to join the Jets or signed to depart the Green & White:

CORNERBACKS
Jets Holdovers: Bless Austin, Kyron Brown, Nate Hairston, Darryl Roberts
Newly Signed UFA: Brian Poole (reportedly re-signed)
Free Agent Jets: Maurice Canady
Departed: Trumaine Johnson (released)
Veterans Still Available: Xavier Rhodes (MIN), Prince Amukamara (CHI), Logan Ryan (TEN)
