Jets' 2017 Schedule Is a Different Breed

Green & White Changeups from '16 Include Season Opener at Buffalo and Finale at New England

No two NFL seasons are the same one year to the next, and the same can be said of NFL schedules.

Exhibit A: The New York Jets' 2017 schedule, released along with every other team's schedule by the league this evening.

The Jets will not open at home this year, as they did in 2016 and in the six seasons before that. They're opening at Buffalo on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. ET.

Then the next week they will fly to Oakland. Two games on the road to open a season hasn't happened for the Green & White since 1992.

However, they also will not face a long stretch of hard road to start the season, such as six out of nine away from home last year. This time they'll play five of their first nine at home and seven of 10 (plus a bye) before finishing with three of their last four on the road.

As for that finish, here's another big changeup: The Jets will conclude their 2017 campaign at New England with a 1 p.m. kickoff on New Year's Eve. Does that feel different? It should. The Jets haven't finished a season against the Patriots since 1998. And in their 58-year history, they have never before finished a regular season on the road against the Patriots.

As for what this schedule is, here are some more notes to digest. Also, Ethan Greenberg does a deep dive on the Jets' AFC East schedule ahead. **And here's a link** to our 2017 opponent facts and trivia that ran earlier this week.

Home Opener — This year's first home game won't be Game 1 but it will come against the Jets' friends to the south, the Dolphins, who will come to MetLife on Sept. 24. It will be the eighth time the AFC East teams will play in the Jets' home opener. The Jets are 3-4 in the previous seven meetings, but the first time, in 1967, was a 29-7 Jets win at Shea Stadium, and the most recent, 2005 at the old Meadowlands stadium, was also a Green & White victory, by 17-7.

Prime Number — That national night game above has an air of familiarity about it. It'll be the Jets hosting the Bills again, on Thursday night, Nov. 2, on NFL Network. The teams played on Thursday night in 2015 at MetLife Stadium, with the Bills pulling out the 22-17 win. Last year the Thursday nighter shifted to New Era Field (formerly Ralph Wilson Stadium) in Week 2, with the Jets coming home with the 37-31 success.

Super Bowls Redux — The Jets will meet last season's Super Bowl LI participants at home in a three-week span. First it's the New England Patriots at MetLife on Oct. 15, then off to Cleveland the next week before returning home to take on the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 29.

An interesting followup: The Jets will then take on the combatants in Super Bowl 50 in a three-week span when they host Carolina on Nov. 26, then Kansas City on Dec. 3, then travel to Denver to tackle the Broncos on Dec. 10.

Take a Look at the 2017 Slate for the Green & White

Sunday Routine — The Green & White as mentioned have a schedule that head coaches in search of a regular weekly routine love. They have the aforementioned 13 games scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET — their most since 13 one-o'clockers in 1978 in the first year of 16-game schedules. Seven of those 13 are home games.

Happy Holidays — The Jets-Patriots game will be the second New Year's Eve game in franchise history. The only other came in 2006, a 23-3 home win over the Raiders.

The week before, the Jets will be playing on Christmas Eve for the second straight year and seventh time ever when they host the San Diego— er, make that the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife.

Individual tickets to the Jets' 2017 home games will go on sale to the public beginning next Wednesday, April 26. A presale for Jets season ticket holders will begin on Tuesday, April 25.
