Jets QB Tyrod Taylor: 'The Only Thing That Matters to Me Is Winning'

You could call the Jets' 27-24 victory over Atlanta in the rain on Sunday one for the aged.

In the midst of a roster-wide youth movement, the two oldest guys on the Jets' roster -- QB Tyrod Taylor and kicker Nick Folk -- came up big when it matter the most and with the game on the line.

Folk, 41, who came into the game having converted 20-of-20 field goal attempts, missed one from 55 yards in the third quarter ... but then willed through the game-winner from 56 yards with 5 seconds on the clock.

But it was the heroic play of Taylor, 36, that led to the tying TD with 2 minutes to play as he engineered a 15-play, 65-yard drive that took 6:53 off the clock in the fourth quarter and culminated with him scrambling for the score from 10 yards out. On that drive, Taylor converted two third-down plays (one a pass when he was hit in the backfield and the ball floated fortuitously to WR Allen Lazard) and once on fourth down, overall picking up 21 yards on his own, including the 10-yard scoring scamper after the 2-minute warning.

"They took away the first and second read as I stepped up in the pocket, sometimes defense doesn't account for quarterback, so I saw a lane and went," Taylor said about his TD run. "But 55 [Atlanta LB Kaden Elliss] did a good job of trying to cut that off and I put my foot in the ground. I was very close to reaching, but I felt the guy from behind and kind of remember the play that we talked about earlier this week, about just not reaching when we're not supposed to. Trust in my feet, trust the progression, and it got me up, in and out of the pocket."

And into the end zone ... 24-24 after Folk's PAT.

Then the Falcons (4-8) went three-and-out. The Jets went three-and-out. And the Jets' defense forced yet another Atlanta three-and-out, setting up the Jets (3-9) with 35 seconds left and the ball at their 43-yard line.

Taylor, who ran 8 times for 44 yards, then sped to his longest run of the game -- 14 yards to the Falcons' 43 with 27 seconds remaining. A false start penalty to rookie RT Armand Membou set the Jets back 5 yards, but then Taylor found WR Adonai Mitchell (who finished with a team-leading 8 catches for 102 yards, which included a 52-yard TD bomb from Taylor) for a 10-yard and then a 5-yard pass and a first down at the Atlanta 33. With 5 seconds showing on the clock, Folk trotted out and nailed the game-winner.

"We've been in a lot of games this year," Taylor said of the team's five earlier losses by one score. "We haven't consistently put our best body of work together, but I think moments like this, in games like this, it confirms what we're doing on the day-to-day is right. If we all believe we can put special wins together ... I just like to see ... I love to see the resilience, regardless of circumstances, no one wavers. Just happy."

Taylor, speaking about the Jets' decision to sign Folk for his second stint with the team, said it put his mind at ease. Not only for Folk's long-term consistency kicking the pigskin, but for another more personal reason.

"I was glad when Nick signed, because that didn't make me the oldest on the team," Taylor said. "I'd never been in that place. I was always the young guy playing, but, yeah, those times have changed. But got a lot of respect for Nick. He's done it the right way for a long time."

He added: "I've been around for a while [15 years with 7 teams], but at the same time, I don't feel old either. I think it's this opportunity to just support the guys within this locker room and share some of my experiences. I've been on some very good teams, some so-so teams as well. And I think all of those experiences are something to gather information from and to share with younger guys because you never know where they were at. I'm sure that I've been in their shoes at some point throughout their season or their careers. So just trying to use that wisdom, or those experiences, years of experience, to shed light to hopefully better their careers."

Taylor summed up a thrilling afternoon, one where he completed 19-of-33 passes for 172 yards, but more importantly put an exclamation point on his long career.

"The only thing that matters to me is winning," he said. "I know the work that we put in, week in and week out, and when you take the field with the guys to battle, the only thing that matters is winning."
