The offseason has begun at 1 Jets Drive.
In the aftermath of a season that GM Darren Mougey acknowledged "did not go as planned," he with reporters Tuesday that roster evaluation started early on Monday morning and will continue throughout the week.
"We started meeting with players, we met with players until about 7 p.m. yesterday," he said. "We had a lot of good conversations. Some of those meetings will continue to happen today."
He added: "Thursday, myself and AG [HC Aaron Glenn], again we'll get together in private and talk further detail about offseason planning, what the roster might look like, some of our goals in the offseason. And that will really kick it off. I'm excited about the offseason as we go into it."
Mougey, who arrived at 1 Jets Drive nearly a year ago, addressed several roster needs during his first season at the helm of the Jets' front office. Throughout the 2025 season, the team brought in several key contributors including DLs Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs, CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr., and WRs John Metchie III and Adonai Mitchell.
"Excited about those players and that we were able to get those guys," he said, specifically highlighting Briggs, who was acquired from the Browns ahead of Week 1. "Every one of those additions has its own story and how they got here."
The Jets also acquired significant draft capital, for 2026 and 2027, through in-season trades with the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys. The Jets currently hold the No. 16 overall pick (via the trade of CB Sauce Gardner to the Colts) in addition to the No. 2 overall pick, behind the Las Vegas Raiders, in the 2026 NFL Draft.
And though Mougey acknowledged "there's no doubt it feels good to know where you're at with [No. 2]," he stressed there is plenty of work to be done ahead of late April. As he and his staff evaluate the current roster and navigate free agency, Mougey said it will be important to strike a balance in the team's offseason approach.
"I think everyone wants to be aggressive, but calculated, with how they attack offseason," he said. "Whether that's free agency and the draft, and just knowing your team, knowing your division and what you need. You can say it's an aggressive approach, but it really needs to be a very calculated approach, knowing your resources -- your draft resources, your cap, your future cap, and what that might look like. We're always going to look to add and kind of know where we might be deficient and where we might need to really add power to compete in the division."
With this approach, Mougey said he believes the Jets "can be competitive and respectable right away, next year." The lessons learned during the 2025 season, though, will play an important role in propelling the team to that success.
"I've been here a year, I've learned a lot, we've learned a lot," Mougey said. "We've got a clear vision. AG and I, we talk daily on this roster and the vision and this division. … I know we're going to continue to build and add good players to the team that are going to help us win."
He added: "The draft capital we have, the cap space, and just being here now for a year with AG -- working with AG, the staff, getting to learn the staff, getting to learn the players, getting to learn this division -- I feel more confident today than ever moving forward with what we have going."
