The Jets' communication staff released the team's first depth chart of the summer Monday. While Sam Darnold is listed as the No. 3 quarterback behind Teddy Bridgewater and starter Josh McCown, there is a rookie on defense who has his name on the top line.

Defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd, a third-round pick from Fort Hays State who has been a staple with the starters, is listed with the first unit line along with veterans Steve McLendon and Leonard Williams. Four veteran newcomers — RB Isaiah Crowell, C Spencer Long, ILB Avery Williamson and CB Trumaine Johnson — were also slotted in with the first team.

In terms of position battles, Eric Tomlinson is followed by Jordan Leggett, Neal Sterling, rookie Chris Herndon and Clive Walford at tight end. Veteran Andre Roberts, who is battling with Lucky Whitehead and rookie Trenton Cannon, is atop the depth chart at the return spots.

But things will become clearer in the weeks ahead as competitions heat up across the roster.
