HS Coach of the Week: Vincent Ascolese, North Bergen

The New York Jets announced today that Vincent Ascolese of North Bergen (N.J.) High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Ascolese will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program and will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.

The award, in its 16th year, is given to coaches in the tristate area who serve the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.

Coach Ascolese is in his 39th season as head coach of the Bruins and in his 50th and final year of coaching overall. He has the third-most wins in New Jersey high school football with a career record of 356-128-7. During his 11 seasons at Hoboken High School, his football team won a state championship in 1969. Ascolese's North Bergen teams have won six group sectional championships (1977, '78, '84, '88, '90 and '97) to go along with 13 county championships. In addition to his coaching duties, Ascolese is in his 26th year as an assistant superintendent for business at the North Bergen Board of Education.

On Friday, North Bergen defeated the Passaic Tech Bulldogs, 20-14 in overtime, to move on to the semifinal round of the North 1, Group 4 playoffs. The Bruins will travel to face the Union City Soaring Eagles in a rematch of their regular-season contest on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.
