Forté's Back & 7 More Practice Takeaways

Forté Practices Full, Mangold Gets a Rest and Marshall Is Excused

Offensive POD: For the first time in training camp, RB Matt  Forté participated in team drills and he saw a lot of action. Forté, who has led the NFL in yards from scrimmage since 2008, can make it happen on the ground and through the air. Our favorite play in practice was Chan Gailey getting Forté out of the backfield, matching him up on a linebacker and then Ryan Fitzpatrick finding No. 22 down the middle of the field for a sizable gain.  During his stop by camp, former Jets RB LaDainian Tomlinson said he thought Forté could be an elite receiver if that was his position.  Forté could thrive in Chan Gailey's system and that was a welcome sign to see No. 22 back on the field.

Defensive POD: While S Ronald Martin had a pair of interceptions today, CB Darrelle Revis came up with an excellent PD that was star quality. After Geno Smith went to a bootleg, Revis kept rookie WR Charone Peake close to his moving Island and he came up with a nifty deflection.

Sprints: Early in practice, Todd Bowles called his players in and delivered a message. Then the Jets ran gassers and returned for a talk from Bowles. The second-year head coach said his team needed the conditioning, but the tempo noticeably picked up following the group run.

Mangold & Marshall: Veteran C Nick Mangold had a rest day while star WR Brandon Marshall missed Wednesday's session with an excused absence. With Mangold out, Wesley Johnson worked with the first unit and Dakota Dozier got some more reps at center for a second consecutive day.

Notables: Rookie LB Darron Lee seems to be in a nice groove on the practice field and today he knocked down a Fitzpatrick pass before a run stuff on the next play… QB Bryce Petty dialed long distance to fellow rookie WR Jalin Marshall for a 65-yard TD… Fitz hit WR Eric Decker on a couple of touch passes including one that covered 40 yards… DL Sheldon Richardson welcomed  Forté with a stop at the line followed by a throwdown… Geno Smith's favorite target today was speedy WR Robby Anderson, a Temple product who can fly… Both of Martin's picks came against rookie QB Christian Hackenberg, who has been receiving valuable reps as the scout team QB. The second-round pick could see action Friday night… Both DL Muhammad Wilkerson and Steve McLendon  participated in team drills and "Big Mo" could make his preseason debut in Washington.

Did Not Practice: RBs Romar Morris (shoulder) and Dominique Williams (concussion), C Nick Mangold (rest), CB Dexter McDougle (hamstring), S Doug Middleton (leg) and WR Brandon Marshall (excused).

PUP: RT Breno Giacomini (back) & WR Devin Smith (leg)
