7 Takeaways From Practice

Before Inclement Weather, Rookie Australian Punter Took Advantage of the Open Air

**

Offensive POD**: While the long explosive play from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Brandon Marshall was exciting, let's go with the first unit's final play of Saturday's session. With the offense at the one-yard line and just a second or two on the clock, Chan Gailey got Marshall free for a short score. While the Jets finished third in red zone efficiency last season (66.0 TD%), they truly believe there is room for improvement in that area. And everything about Camp Bowles 2.0 revolves around finishing.

Defensive POD: Cornerback Dee Milliner came up with a nifty takeaway in a team drill. Now depending on your angle, it could have been an interception or a forced fumble/fumble recovery.  But what is conclusive is Milliner recorded a takeaway by playing through the whistle. After Fitzpatrick threw across the field to Kenbrell Thompkins, Milliner quickly closed, punched the ball up and grasped the rock before going out of bounds.

Mother Nature:More than 1,500 turned out for practice today,*but lightning in the area forced the Jets inside. *The Green & White will try again tomorrow as their second public practice of camp will begin around 2:00 p.m.

Australian Ruled: Lachlan Edwards, a seventh-rounder from Sam Houston State, put on a punting exhibition during early special team work. Edwards, who posted gross averages of  41.5, 44.1 and 42.3 the past three years respectively, blasted the ball with consistency as one punt easily traveled more than 70 yards. Edwards' hang-time, which topped 5.0 on a few occasions, was also impressive. Not to be outdone were both veteran K Nick Folk and rookie K Ross Martin as each hit six consecutive field goals in rounds that concluded with 58-yard strikes.

Oh Obioha: During one team session, Fitzpatrick was pressured right up the gut and the ball was jarred into midair. Rookie DE Julien Obioha, a Texas A&M product, plucked it out of the air and the 280-pounder rumbled the other way.

Notables: Sweet fade in 7-on-7 from Geno Smith to Marshall… LB Bruce Carter, who had five interceptions with the Cowboys in 2014, picked off Smith on the final play of practice in the end zone… DL Leonard Williams looks unblockable at times… Fitz put some mustard on a pretty pass over the middle to a cutting Quincy Enunwa… For a second consecutive day, Buster Skrine made a fine read in 7-on-7 and recorded an interception… Smith hit TE Jace Amaro for a score in red zone work, but Doug Middleton picked off a Smith pass intended for TE Brandon Bostick in 7-on-7. Middleton, a rookie from Appalachian State, has good ball awareness and it will be interesting to see how he progresses.

DNP: RB Matt Forte (hamstring), CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) & DL Sheldon Richardson. Forté got in some work on the jugs after practice while Revis got in some speed and agility drills during this afternoon's session.

PUP List: LG James Carpenter (hamstring), RT Breno Giacomini (back), DB Kendall James , RB Khiry Robinson  (leg), WR Devin Smith  (knee) & DL Muhammad Wilkerson (leg).
