3 Takeaways | Special Teams Fires on All Cylinders, RB Breece Hall Continues Fourth-Quarter Magic

‘Complementary Football’ Still a Priority for HC Aaron Glenn

3 takes

The Jets (2-7) earned their second consecutive victory, defeating the Cleveland Browns (2-7), 27-20, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Here are three takeaways from the game.

Historic Day on Special Teams
Special teams took center stage in the first quarter, as RB Kene Nwangwu returned a kickoff 99 yards to even the score, 7-7. It was the fifth kickoff return TD of Nwangwu's career, which is the most by any player in the league since he entered in 2021. It was also Nwangwu's second TD return for the Green & White.

"Having that I feel like that just really changed the game, the momentum," said WR Isaiah Williams. "Like, after he scored everybody on the sideline was just like pumped, and I was too. And then right after that, [special teams coordinator Chris] Banjo came up to me like, now it's your turn."

Williams then returned a punt 74 yards to the end zone, marking the first TD return of his life. Williams added to his remarkable redemption story, from overcoming two early season mistakes in Miami to winning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors in Week 8 and continuing to find ways to contribute.

"That's the power of believing in your players," HC Aaron Glenn said of the duo.

Sunday's win marked the first time in franchise history that a punt and kickoff were returned for TDs in the same game, and it was also the first time any team in the league has accomplished that feat since 2017.

While the two TD returns captured all the attention, though, Glenn stressed that there were several other players and moments that contributed to the standout performance.

"Special teams did a hell of a job making plays," Glenn said. "There were some underlying things that really didn't show up on the stat sheet."

P Austin McNamara continued his impressive performance this season with five punts for 249 yards (49.8 average), and three of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. K Nick Folk extended his perfect season, kicking two FGs in the victory. Folk has now converted all 19 of his FG attempts in 2025.

"I give a lot of credit to [special teams coordinator Chris] Banjo and [special teams assistant Kevin] O'Dea," Glenn said.

'Superman' Breece Hall Sparks Offense Late
For the second consecutive game, RB Breece Hall was the go-to guy in the fourth quarter.

Hall recorded 73 of his 125 scrimmage yards in the fourth quarter alone. Hall found the end zone on a 42-yard catch-and-run and later added a 30-yard carry that set up a Nick Folk FG.

Cleveland entered Week 9 having allowed only 68 rushing yards in the fourth quarter (8.5 per fourth quarter), the lowest marks in the league. In Week 10, the Jets rushed for 38 yards in the fourth quarter, the most the Browns defense has allowed this season.

"Breece did a hell of a job of making something out of nothing," Glenn said. "When you play cover-0, there can be an unblocked player, and Breece did a hell of a job of making one guy miss and actually getting a crease and making a play. So, it was a combination between the O-line making their blocks in certain situations and then Breece being superman and making some of those plays."

"When we needed him, he came through and that's something that's not new for us," HC Aaron Glenn said. "I trust him with everything. I trust the ball in his hands and when times are tough, he will get the ball."

Complementary Football Remains Priority, But Finding Ways to Win 'All That Matters'
HC Aaron Glenn has spoken about prioritizing complementary football, but he said Sunday's game was another example of "supportive football" at certain moments. Special teams provided a spark in the first quarter, and the defense recorded a season-high 6 sacks, led by edge Will McDonald IV's career-high 4. The offense, which struggled early, found a way to make plays late.

"We have a lot of things we need to work on – defense, offense, and special teams," McDonald said. "All of us played a good role today. As long as we keep doing that and keep being repetitive and relentless, we'll be just fine."

And while that was enough to secure the win, Glenn stressed the importance of cleaning things up to put together a complete game in all three phases.

"I know this -- I wasn't happy just in general, offense or defense, in that first half," Glenn said. "But I thought in the second half we did some things to give us a chance to win. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters."

He added Monday: "It's a by-any-means-necessary type of league. My plan is to continue to coach to win the game, however that may be. And we're going to continue to do that."
