3 Takeaways | Defense Provides Spark, Offense Aiming to 'Go Back to Work'

HC Aaron Glenn: ‘There Were a Number of Things that We Have to Get Better At’

The Jets (0-6) fell to the Denver Broncos (4-2), 13-11, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday. Here are three takeaways from the Week 6 game.

QB Justin Fields, Offense Have to Get Better at 'a Number of Things'

HC Aaron Glenn told reporters Monday that QB Justin Fields and the offense "took a step back" in Sunday's loss, and the unit will "have to continue to go back to work" and fix mistakes ahead of Week 7.

"I know there were some times when the ball didn't come out quick and with that, there were a number of things that we have to get better at to do that," Glenn said. "And that's from protection, getting open and Fields getting the ball out. I understand that."

A fumble recovery in Denver territory and a 72-yard kick return by RB Kene Nwangwu allowed the Jets to convert on 2 FG attempts in the first half, but the offense struggled to move the ball and find a rhythm. The unit did not record a first down until just before the 2-minute warning of the first half, and the team finished the day with 82 net yards of offense. Fields was sacked 9 times in the loss. But despite the offensive struggles, Glenn is confident in the unit's ability to bounce back and execute at a high level.

"I actually thought he did some pretty good things in those four games," Glenn said of Fields. "In this fifth game, he took a step back. … We can't have that. We have to get better at that and he knows that. He knows that better than anyone. I don't think you just try to bench a player after having one true bad game, because I thought the other games he played fairly well."

Glenn said offensive improvement will be determined by a variety of factors including better protection, players getting open and moving the ball quicker.

"I mean even me, I have to do better at, these are the type of concepts we have to give Justin so he can get the ball out," Glenn said. "And just talking with [OC Tanner Engstrand] to make sure we get a chance to do that."

Glenn Reevaluates End of First Half

With the clock winding down before halftime in Sunday's game, the Jets' offense had the ball with the opportunity to either cut the team's deficit to 1 or take a lead heading into the locker room. The Jets had just faked a punt on fourth down, as RB Breece Hall took the snap and snuck forward to extend the drive. Just a few plays later, though, the Jets faced fourth down again after some confusion regarding ball placement.

"The refs said first down, and that's when we were about to give Breece back the ball and someone else said, no it's not -- it's fourth down," Glenn said. "And at that point, if we tried to run a play, I thought that's where the real confusion had come from."

Amidst the confusion, Glenn said the staff ultimately decided to run out the clock and focus on getting the ball back to begin the second half. Glenn said he did not want to put the ball back in the hands of Denver's offense with a timeout and chance to extend its lead, but he acknowledged that in retrospect, he may have handled the situation differently.

"I wish I could have taken the clock down to five seconds and just thrown a Hail Mary to be honest with you," Glenn said. "But at that point, I wanted no confusion. Let's just get out of the half, guys. We're getting the ball back in the second half and let's get ready to go.

"That's a mistake that I made and I hold myself accountable for that."

CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Edge Jermaine Johnson Provide Defensive Spark

In just his second game with the Green & White, CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. set the tone early.

The second-year player, who was acquired by the Jets via a trade from the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 23, forced a fumble on Denver's first possession of the game. Broncos QB Bo Nix connected with WR Troy Franklin for what would have been a first down, but Brownlee was there to punch the ball out. S Andre Cisco recovered the fumble to solidify the Jets' first takeaway of the 2025 season.

"It was huge for us," Glenn said. "Brownlee's one of those guys that he's very physical. He loves man coverage. He came in and he learned our system fairly quick. I thought [DC Steve Wilks] and our DB coaches did a good job with that.

"This Brownlee is a pretty good player. Hopefully he can continue to ascend with us."

After missing the previous three contests, edge Jermaine Johnson returned to the lineup Sunday and provided a spark. He recorded 5 tackles in Sunday's loss and had the team's only sack of Nix late in the fourth quarter on third down.

"Jermaine, he's just one of these players that brings energy," Glenn said. "Obviously, he can get after the quarterback. He's stout at the point of attack. When you add that element to your defense, it only helps you. And that showed yesterday."
