Notebook | HC Aaron Glenn a Man of His Word as Jets Dial Up Run Game

C Josh Myers on RT Armand Membou’s First NFL Game: ‘An Impressive Showing’

Running NB

Ever since he stepped to the podium back in January, HC Aaron Glenn promised that the Jets' offense would put an emphasis on the ground game. Though Sunday's result in the regular-season opener against Pittsburgh didn't end according to plan, in another sense the blueprint was there for all to see.

Of the Jets' 62 plays on offense, more than 50% (39 plays) were carries by either RBs Breece Hall (19), Braelon Allen (6) and Isaiah Davis (2), or QB Justin Fields (12). Hall went for 107 yards and contributed 38 receiving yards in his most productive game since Week 6 of the 2024 season. Overall, the Jets' offense outperformed the Steelers 394 yards to 271.

And that was after RG Alijah Vera-Tucker was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending triceps tear, which meant that Joe Tippmann moved from center to RG next to rookie RT Armand Membou, with Josh Myers slotting in effortlessly at center. And how go does that key acquisition by GM Darren Mougey look right now?

"I think what Breece did speaks for itself," Glenn said on Monday. "We talked about it all through training camp. I felt he is going to have a big season for us. He was a tough runner, he has really good speed. On a couple of runs he should have been stopped for negative yards, but he made things happen on his own. I think the way he played speaks for itself."

Glenn then turned his attention to an offensive line, which only allowed a single sack of Fields and saw the left side of the line (LT Olu Fashanu and LG John Simpson) helping to propel the ground attack while all five starters had to deal with a tenacious Pittsburgh defensive front.

"And I think it's the same with the O-line," Glenn said. "I mean, this O-line, they really want to show their physicality, understand exactly who they are, and you got to give them credit because AVT goes down, we put Josh Myers in, Tippmann goes to guard and here we go. Those guys, they didn't blink, not one bit. And that showed a lot from what we've been trying to create in training camp. One guy going down is not going to stop what we're trying to do."

Josh Myers on Playing With Justin Fields Again: 'It Was So Cool'

Josh Myers and Justin Fields are no strangers to collaborating in a football game, having played together at Ohio State. Myers, who was signed by the Jets after four solid seasons with Green Bay, found himself turning back the clock on Sunday. With Alijah Vera-Tucker on injured reserve, Joe Tippmann moved over to RG and Myers was in the middle of the Jets' O-line against Pittsburgh.

"It was super cool," he said on Monday. "It was amazing watching that, especially that touchdown he threw to Garrett [Wilson, another Buckeye alumni], it was like bit was 2019 all over again. I mean, I've seen that throw happen from the pocket so many times. So it's just amazing being back with those guys."

With Tippmann to his immediate right, Myers said he was also keeping watch on rookie RT Armand Membou, who was playing in his first NFL game after a stellar career at Missouri. The Jets' top draft pick (No. 7 overall) in the 2025 NFL draft, acquitted himself well in every aspect of his game.

"It was fun to watch him play, especially against such a good player [Pittsburgh's T.J. Watt]," Myers said. "I thought he did a nice job. I'm excited to keep watching.

"I think he has everything you want in a tackle. It's his athleticism, his ability to move, running, in the pass game. It was really impressive, especially that being the first game of his career. That was an impressive showing."

LB Jamien Sherwood on Jets Offense: 'I Love the Way They Played'

LB Jamie Sherwood was full of compliments for the offense the Jets put on the field and what it means as the season progresses.

"I love the way our offense played yesterday," he said. "Breece [Hall] ran the ball well. The offensive line looked very good. All the blocking assignments were precise. Receivers. I feel like they did a great job. And I just love the way Justin [Fields] ran his offense yesterday.

"Obviously, as a defense, you love that they're on the field for a while, not too many threes-and-out. So our defense was able to stay fresh every time we got to go on the field, no turnovers. And then as a defense like I was saying, there were just some communications issues. I put that on myself. We just got to be better in those moments, because we have a great team, and all we just got to do is play complementary football. Offense did a great job. Defense, we did a great job as well, but there's some little things on our side of the ball that we can clean up, and we're going to be great."
