Jets Seek to Continue Momentum-Building Today at FedEx Field

Injuries Still a Factor for Green & White, on O-Line & at Cornerback, as They Prepare to Battle Redskins

The Jets are warming up under gray skies on FedEx Field now with the idea of continuing the momentum against the Redskins that they established last week at home against the Giants.

But as usual in this painful season, injuries may have a say about that.

On offense, Sam Darnold will try to take another step in his maturation against the 'Skins in the Maryland suburbs, the same opponent and location for the first pro start of his career, at Washington in the second game of the 2018 preseason. He has a complement of skill players he's been working with lately in RB Le'Veon Bell, WRs Robby Anderson, Demaryius Thomas and Jamison Crowder (returning to play the team that drafted him in 2015), and TE Ryan Griffin.

But Darnold will be protected by yet another combination of five linemen. With RG Brian Winters and C Ryan Kalil being placed on Injured Reserve in the past week, the Jets OL will have Tom Compton at RG for his first start as a Jet, along with C Jonotthan Harrison making his 13th start for the Green & White over three seasons.

The picture on defense is a little bleaker in the back end, as both starting corners, Darryl Roberts (calf) and Nate Hairston (thumb/knee), who struggled against the Giants, have been deactivated. That leaves nickel Brian Poole, Arthur Maulet, recently signed Maurice Canady, and rookies Bless Austin and Kyron Brown to man the position against first-time Redskins starting QB Dwayne Haskins and his offense.

On the other hand, LB Neville Hewitt, who missed the past four games with neck and knee injuries, is active and could start next to James Burgess, who's expected to start again for C.J. Mosley (groin).

At stake: The Jets will try to improve their record this season to 3-7 and drop Washington, under the direction of interim coach and former Jets offensive line boss Bill Callahan, to 1-8.

Here are the Jets' seven inactives today:

  • CB Nate Hairston
  • CB Darryl Roberts
  • LB Paul Worrilow
  • S Matthias Farley
  • LB C.J. Mosley
  • DL Jordan Willis
  • C Leo Koloamatangi

And the Redskins' seven-man inactive list:

  • WR Paul Richardson
  • QB Colt McCoy
  • S Deshazor Everett
  • RB Chris Thompson
  • C Ross Pierschbacher
  • TE Vernon Davis
  • DL Tim Settle

The Jets are wearing their white jerseys and green pants to take on the Burgundy & Gold. The last game the Jets won wearing white/green, either their new uniforms or the previous unis, was the 23-17 overtime win at San Francisco in 2016.

Jerome Boger is the referee for his 22nd game since 2006. Among the games he worked as ref were the Jets' 17-14 win at San Diego in the 2009 playoffs, their 30-27 OT conquest of the Patriots at home in 2013, the 31-10 vanquishing of the Browns in the 2015 opener, and the 34-21 Thursday night defeat of the Bills in 2017.
