Justin Fields Sustains Dislocated Toe During Jets Training Camp Practice

QB1 Will Be Managed Day-to-Day

After medical evaluation following Thursday's practice, Jets QB Justin Fields sustained a dislocated toe in his right foot and will be day-to-day. The Jets starting QB avoided serious injury and significant missed time.

On the final rep to conclude the first team period, Fields stepped up in a crowded pocket and threw to rookie TE Mason Taylor. LB Quincy Williams had Taylor blanketed, forcing an incompletion as the ball hit the grass. But Fields, favoring his right foot, limped to the sideline, was treated by trainers in the injury tent and then was carted off the field.

"I don't know the severity of the injury," HC Aaron Glenn told reporters after practice. "I do know it's a toe on his right side."

But Glenn wasted no time reminding his team, reporters and fans that he has the utmost confidence in 15th-year QB Tyrod Taylor to take over the QB1 role for as long as Fields may be sidelined.

"Tyrod's been in this league 14 years. With the leadership he brings, we're all good," Glenn said. "I think the most important part is that if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any dropoff as far as what we want to do when it comes to play call. They're very similar when you talk about skillset, that was very enticing to us. And the things we heard about him, I played against him before, and you could just tell the players really gravitate to him when he says something. He's been around this league a long time and he knows what it takes to win, and he's a really good person. We're all excited to have that guy here."

Glenn finished up his news conference with a question about those who, even before knowing the seriousness of Fields' injury, would say of the Jets, "Here we go again." It was a little less than two years ago that Aaron Rodgers, the future Pro Football Hall of Fame QB newly arrived on the Jets, suffered a season-ending Achilles tear four plays into the 2023 season opener.

Glenn acknowledged the coming reaction from the Green & White fan base but had words of patience for all.

"I've been there and done that," he said, referring to the players he and the Lions had to replace on their defense last season after a rash of injuries hit several front-line players. "It becomes a mentality for the most part. The thing I have to do is make sure I can transition that mentality to everybody else. I understand how this league is and how social media starts to take over and everybody starts to panic. Listen, we have a number of men in that locker room that want to win, that are learning how to win. It's my job to make sure I push that over the edge.... That's the plan.

"I understand the outside noise, I understand what the fans go through. But it's really early, really early, and we have a lot of time. We're going to focus on every day and focus on what we do on the grass. That's going to take care of everything we need."

And shortly following that news briefing, Glenn, Fields and the Jets received good news on the quarterback's timeline following Thursday's evaluation.
