Green Day Will Rock on Jets Opening Night

The New York Jets have announced today that the multi-platinum rock band Green Day will perform live with the Broadway cast of the smash-hit, Tony Award-winning American Idiot to open the Jets' 2010 regular season in their new stadium. The halftime show will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.

The team also announced that Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses, will perform a tailgate concert featuring lead singer Myles Kennedyand two special guests — Nicole Scherzinger, lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and Dancing with the Stars champion, and Jason Bonham of Led Zeppelin — pregame on the plaza just outside the stadium. Scherzinger will also perform the National Anthem. Opening night entertainment is presented by Bud Light, MasterCard, Pepsi, HBO GO and MAX GO.

Green Day, which is singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, are currently touring in support of their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown. Produced by Butch Vig, 21st Century Breakdown was released by Reprise Records on May 15, 2009, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. 21st Century Breakdown won the GRAMMY® for Best Rock Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Green Day won two GRAMMY® Awards for the groundbreaking rock opera American Idiot, which sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. The band collaborated with one of the theatre's most acclaimed creative teams, led by Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening; Tom Kitt, two-time Tony Award-winning composer and orchestrator; Steven Hoggett, Olivier Award-winning choreographer, and producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman to bring this explosive, iconic album to the stage.

The smash-hit, Tony Award-winning musicalAmerican Idiottells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world leads them on the most exhilarating journey of the Broadway season.

The Jets' 2010 regular season kicks off when they host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. ESPN Radio will be distributing light bands that glow green to fans entering the stadium. Jets opening night entertainment is produced by GameDay Entertainment LLC, Executive Producer: David Saltz.
