On Sunday, the curtain came down on Aaron Glenn's first season as a head coach, a 35-8 defeat against Buffalo Bills, the team's fifth straight loss to finish the season 3-14.
"I let the players down, I let the organization down," Glenn said in his postgame comments. "And that burns me. It really does."
He added: "But here's what I do know. I know the reason why I came here, and I am not going to waver from my beliefs on what I think wins games in this league. And I am very confident in myself. I'm very confident in this organization, very confident in our owner [Woody Johnson], I'm very confident in Moug [GM Darren Mougey], and we're going to work to get this exactly where it needs to be. And I do know that. But I'll tell you this, this season's on me. It's on me, and I get that, but we're going to work our asses off."
As has been the case, at least over the past five games, the Jets fell behind early, ending the first half trailing by 21-0. Overall, the offense again was limited on the ground (with RB1 Breece Hall, who eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing last week) out injured and the Bills packing the box and challenging rookie QB Brady Cook, who was making his fourth start, to throw the ball.
"It's a tough one," said Cook, who was 11 of 22 for 60 yards with a late TD pass to FB Andrew Beck. "They had our number. We didn't execute for most of that game."
On Sunday evening in Orchard Park, the Jets picked up 9 first downs, had the ball for 21:40 to the Bills' 38:20, ran 46 plays on offense while Buffalo had 72.
"Obviously, we didn't do enough to win games," Glenn said. "You know, that's what it really comes down to. I can nitpick and I can talk about a lot of different things, but at the end of the day, we didn't do enough to win enough games."
Asked if he doubts his ability to lead the Jets to success in the AFC East and beyond, Glenn refused to concede.
"I think you guys know my history," he told reporters. "I've been there and I've done that, so that's why my confidence is not shaken, and I can go all the way back from my time in Cleveland to New Orleans to Detroit. I've been there and done that. And listen, I understand what everybody on the outside is saying. I ain't going to take all those arrows, and that's OK, right? Because I do know this ... it's going to turn, it's going to turn. I'm very confident in that. So I look forward to getting back. I look forward to starting this offseason. I look forward to sitting down with Moug. I look forward to sitting down with Woody, and putting our heads together and talking about how we're going to get this thing turned in the right direction."
He added: "Every season is different and this locker room will not be the same and that's just how it is. So after every season it doesn't matter if you go 15 and 2, the season's over. What you going to do next? The NFL doesn't care and this is a year-by-year league so I'm not going to let this season affect me from going to the following season. Only thing I am going to do is learn from it, right?"
