Justin Fields played one drive in the Jets' preseason opener vs. the Packers, and he made the most of it. Leading the Green & White on 10-play, 79-yard possession, Fields culminated his night with a 13-yard scoring run with 8:52 left in the first quarter.
Fields hurt the Packers repeatedly in the middle of the field, showing poise in the pocket and taking what was available. After two Breece Hall runs, Fields converted a third-and-5 with a 6-yard toss to WR Tyler Johnson. Two plays later, Fields went to FB Andrew Beck over the middle for 12 yards. Following a cutback run from Braelon Allen, Fields got 24 more yards after a short delivery to Beck.
"We kind of knew their underneath defenders got a lot of depth," Fields said. "My biggest thing was just taking what the defense gave me."
HC Aaron Glenn added: "There were a couple of shot plays that we called, and he did a really good job just taking what the defense game him."
After a couple runs including a Fields' scramble for 1 yard, the Jets faced a third-and-5 at the GB 13. Receiving the shotgun snap, Fields felt edge pressure and stepped up and saw green. His decisive cut to his right left a Packers defender to a diving tackle attempt with nothing to show for it. Fields got past the pylon and celebrated in the end zone.
"I thought he looked great," Allen said of Fields. "The touchdown run – that's who we've been waiting for, that's who we all wanted to see. Him turning on those legs and be the playmaker that he is."
It was a smart run as there was a lot of traffic on the play and second-year RB Isaiah Davis kept his cover occupied by putting his hands up like he was in receiving mode. If defenders turn their heads on Fields in coverage, they'll be playing with fire all year.
The Jets had great balance on the march as Hall rushed three times for 9 yards, Allen covered 14 on his run and Fields rushed twice for 14 yards. Through the air, Fields was 3-of-4 for 42 yards. He led Garrett Wilson a little too much on a sideline toss but other than that it was a perfect start for the Jets' new QB1.
"We love where he's at right now," Glenn said. "Does he have a ways to go? Absolutely, he does. Is he going to continue to work? Absolutely, he will because that's just who he is. But we know exactly where he's at, we know exactly where we're going and we're going to continue to work our ass off until we get there."
The Fields dash to paydirt gave the Jets their first TD on their opening drive of a preseason since 2019.
