Jets O-Line Is 'Not There Yet' but Saturday at Giants Could Say a Lot About Its Progress

Up-and-Down Joint Practices with Big Blue Tell Joe Tippmann That His Unit Is 'Still Taking Those Next Steps'

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn added a new line to the It Is What It Is quotebook. Asked what the plan is for the Jets' personnel in Saturday night's annual meet-and-greet with the Giants at MetLife Stadium, AG said: "The plan is the plan. That's the plan."

And what might the plan be for the Jets' offensive line in particular? Continued improvement from a group that this Jets offense is going to be counting on all season.

Glenn spent a lot of time with the O rather than the D during the joint practices with the Giants, and while he wasn't sugarcoating the line's up-and-down showing against a tough Big Blue front Tuesday, he was still upbeat in summing up the unit's rebound Wednesday.

"Listen, I'm hard on our guys, and I know this is a hard game," Glenn said. "And I said this yesterday about some of the players that the Giants have, they're just tough to block one-on-one. But I expect our guys to do it because we've got some damn good players on our side of the ball, too. So I'm just going to leave it at that. Just know that I'm very pleased with how we came out."

That is one of the mantras about the Jets OL this year that hadn't been heard as much in recent injury-marred and inconsistent campaigns. Even the players right in the middle of the action are feeling it.

"We've got a bunch of tough, physical guys that will get on their blocks going downhill," C/G Joe Tippmann said before this week's practices. "And then, when we do get into those combos, we can move people. So I'm really excited. We're still taking those next steps, but I'm really excited about the whole run game that we're doing. "

LG John Simpson said in June: "I think we can be one of the better groups in the NFL. I do have the confidence in this group to be able to have that title."

And RG Alijah Vera-Tucker thought the Green Bay showing by the first, second and third lines was not just a summer one-off. The Jets racked up 403 yards, converted 8-of-15 third downs, gave up no sacks or turnovers, and controlled the ball for 38:41 — their most in any road game, pre- or regular season, since they had 39:49 at the Giants in the teams' 2021 preseason opener.

"That's what it's supposed to look like for every team," AVT said this week, "especially with an offensive line with as much talent as us, to put that together and execute at a high level and run the rock as much as we can."

They ran it for a fair amount of 137 yards vs. the Packers that would have been a gaudy 210 yards had rookie FA Donovan Edwards ' 73-yard bolt to the Lambeau Field end zone not been nullified by a holding penalty.

Regardless of how much the Jets are talking up their running game this preseason, they know they also will have to throw it effectively, and to do that, they'll have to keep Justin Fields upright in the pocket. Fortunately for all, some contact, such as taking QBs to the ground, was limited in the joint practices, so the Giants' eight sacks in the two days of team periods didn't hurt as much physically and only caused the Jets to set their collective jaw even firmer.

"Their defense is elite, so I think it's great work for our O-linemen and it was just competitive," Fields said. "Just competing against other teams, seeing different looks that we might see during the season from other teams, it's great work for sure."

Needless to say, the tackling goes live on Saturday night, and AG's script for his O-line, since he started his starters at Green Bay, could include another series or two for his first-stringers against the Giants. It could mean Tippmann at LG again for the injured Simpson, Josh Myers at C, Vera-Tucker at RG and young bookends Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou at the tackles. Whether the ones play a lot or a little or not at all, progress continues to be the unit's password.

"We've always got to keep getting better," Tippmann said. "But you know, it's still early in camp, and we're still still working toward that end goal that we have in mind. We're not there yet, but we know we've just got to keep moving forward. Every time we go into the meeting room, Coach is honest with us, we're honest with ourselves, and we're able to just take that on the chin and learn from it."

And continue to build that chemistry that will power them a long way toward being the dominant unit they think they can be.

"I think we do a really good job of communicating," Vera-Tucker said. "Everybody understands their roles and their assignments. I think we're all coming together. And it's gong to be fun, man. I'm excited for Week 1."
