The Jets have acquired veteran quarterback Geno Smith and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. A second-round pick (No. 39) of the Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft, Smith returns to the team that drafted him 13 years ago.
Over 12 seasons with five teams, Smith has completed 65.2% of his passes for 22,168 yards with 124 TDs and 89 INTs. Smith started 15 games for the Raiders last season, connecting on 67.4% of his throws for 3,035 yards with 19 TDs and 17 INTs.
Prior to joining the Raiders, Smith set single-season career-highs and Seahawks franchise records in 2024 for attempts (578, t-fourth in NFL), completions (407, t-second in NFL), yards (4,320, fourth in NFL) and completion percentage (70.4%, fifth in NFL). He had 10 games with above a 70.0% completion percentage.
Initially a backup in Seattle in 2020-21, Smith became the 'Hawks' full-time starter in 2022 and led the league with nine games with a 70.0%-or-higher completion percentage and 10 games with a 100.0-plus passer rating. Then in 2023, Smith set an NFL mark with seven go-ahead TD passes in the fourth quarter or overtime. During his three-year run as starter, Smith started 49 games and was named the 2022 Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and 2023. In that timeframe, Smith completed 68% of his passes for 12,226 yards with 71 TDs and 35 INTs.
Smith played his first four NFL seasons with the Jets and appeared in 30 games, throwing for 5,962 yards with 28 TDs and 36 INTs. In 2013, Smith became the 13th rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 3,000 yards (3,046). His 366 rushing yards as a rookie are the second-most in a single season by a Jets passer, while his 6 rush TDs tied for second-most in a year by a Jets quarterback. In the 2014 season finale at Miami, Smith became the first Jets quarterback since Ken O'Brien in Week 16 of 1990 to lead his team to victory and finish with a perfect passer rating. In the Jets' 37-24 win over the Dolphins, Smith went 20-of-25 passing for 358 yards with 3 TDs.
The professional reunion will be a full-circle moment for Smith. He was at Radio City Music Hall when the Jets selected the West Virgina product on the second night of the 2013 draft.
"A great experience, a dream come true, to finally hear my name being called and to be a Jet is one of the things that I will carry with me for a lifetime," he said.
Now Smith, 35, who has been credited with 13 fourth-quarter comebackers and 19 game-winning drives, is again a Jet.
