HC Aaron Glenn told reporters on Monday that evaluation will continue throughout the week as he determines who will be — Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor — the Jets' starting QB for Week 8 in Cincinnati.
"That's something that I want to continue to look at," Glenn said. "… There's a lot of thought that goes into that for me personally and then being able to get with the staff. And then just being able to ask other coaches who have been in that situation, how they handle that."
Glenn made a QB change at halftime of Sunday's 13-6 loss after Fields completed 6-of-12 passes for 46 yards in the first half. He was sacked 3 times as the Jets entered the locker room trailing by 10-3, and Taylor prepared to take the field for the second half.
"A little bit [surprised], but at the same time, I can't be mad at the decision," Fields said after the game. "I understand why. It's life, it's football. I've learned to not take anything personally. Coach AG, I think he wanted to see if there was a spark."
Taylor entered the game with 10:36 remaining in the third quarter and completed 10-of-22 passes for 126 yards, but he was intercepted twice by Panthers CB Jaycee Horn.
"I thought the offense moved the ball better, but that has a number of things that you have to look at," Glenn said. "Number one, we were more in a hurry-up situation, which I think [Taylor's] done a really good job of. But man, the two picks is something that's tough. And you can't have that. … Those are things that can't happen. But I will say this -- in that stretch, we did move the ball a little bit better."
Glenn said the QB decision is "always based on who gives you the best chance to win," and he acknowledged the need to evaluate the different challenges each weekly opponent presents. Taylor said Sunday that he will be prepared to contribute no matter what Glenn's decision is.
"As a competitor, you always want to start, but that's not my decision, and nor will I feel any way emotionally about whatever coach chooses to decide," Taylor said on Sunday. "I'll be ready for the opportunity, but I'm also here to support Justin as well. I've got a lot of respect for him and every guy in this locker room, so I'm here to do what I need to do when my number is called."
Glenn will continue his evaluation process as the Jets search for answers offensively and aim to secure their first win of the 2025 season.
"I want to make sure I make the right decision," Glenn said. "I don't want to make rash decisions, either. I just want to make sure when the decision is made, it will be the right one."
