For the second straight game, the Jets' offense took the opening kickoff and embarked on a long drive (13 plays covering 66 yards and burning 7:17 of clock time) that resulted in an unsatisfactory ending.
This time, the drive stalled, and the Jets jumped out in front of the Dallas Cowboys on a Nick Folk's 25-yard field goal. It was the last time the Jets led in the 37-22 loss, dropping their fifth-straight game to open Aaron Glenn's tenure as head coach.
"I thought we had a really good opportunity," Glenn said after the game.
The Jets were trailing, 10-3, late in the second quarter and were driving in an attempt to tie the game. On a first-down play at the Dallas 23-yard line, RB Breece Hall (who had 113 rush yards on 14 carries) picked up 10 yards, but had the ball punched out of his grasp by Marist Liufau. It was the Jets' eighth turnover of the season against zero takeaways.
"We were going in to score, we get the fumble, and it seemed like things went downhill after that," Glenn said. "And that's something that we can't let happen. And I look at myself when it comes to that, because it seemed like the wind was let out of us in that situation, and I got to figure out a way to get our guys going.
"This is an imperfect game that we try to make perfect and we have to try to do a better job."
Instead, the Cowboys (2-2-1) took over and drove 91 yards in 7 plays, scoring on a 5-yard run by Javonte Williams for a 17-3 lead with :57 seconds remaining. Forty-two seconds later, Dak Prescott threw a 1-yard TD to TE Jake Ferguson to make it a 23-3 contest.
In 2021, with Glenn as Detroit's first-year DC, the Lions started the season 0-8 under HC Dan Campbell.
"It's going to take time," Glenn said. "This week I talked to two guys, Tony Dungy and Jimmy Johnson, they had these issues early on. I'm not throwing any one of these guys out. Only thing that we can do is go back to work, and that's what we have, we go to London this week."
The Jets "host" Denver (a team they will face for the sixth-straight season) next Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London.
"We haven't taken the ball away," said Glenn, who put on boxing gloves during practice leading up to Sunday's game and demonstrated how to create a turnover. "It's not giveaways, it's not turnovers. You have to take the ball away. That's what you do as a defense. There has to be the mentality on defense that we have to go and get it, because no one's going to give it to us, and we have to be intentional about that, too. So we emphasize it, we attack it, we go through it, but, man, we just have to show up. We got to keep doing it. We can't just sit back and say, 'OK, we're not getting them.' We have to continue to try and emphasize it, and hopefully at some point they're going to come in bunches for us."

Through five games, the Jets' defense has yielded 30 or more points three times (and 29 to Tampa Bay, 27 to Miami in two other games). On Sunday, the Dallas offense gained 416 total yards, 237 on passes by Prescott and 135 rush yards to Williams, even though the Jets ran more plays (73 to 59) and had an edge in time of possession (34:36 to 23:24).
Glenn, who helped the Lions to build a successful defense, was asked if he would take a more hands-on approach to the unit.
"I know that's going to be the thing that everyone says, but I always go back to my first year in Detroit, when we struggled on defense, too, and our head coach had a lot of confidence in me making sure we get it right, and I feel the exact same way," Glenn said. "I have a lot of confidence [DC Steve] Wilks, he has done a lot of great things in this league as a defense coordinator, and I'm allowing him to do his job."
He added: "So I have all the confidence in the world, in him. Have all confidence in the world and [OC] Tanner [Engstrand], and all the confidence in the world in [STC Chris]Banjo."
