Jets HC Aaron Glenn: 'It's Not OK to Lose Like That'

‘You Go Back to Work. You Start to Fix Those Problems’

Candor is one of Aaron Glenn's strong and enduring characteristics, and it came through loud and clear after his Jets were defeated by AFC East rival Buffalo, 30-10, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

"I've been here before as a coach, and I have to look at myself," he said after the Green & White's second straight loss to open Glenn's first season as an NFL head coach. "All the players have to look at themselves and the coaches have to look at themselves also. Apparently, I didn't get the guys ready to play.

"So whatever we see on tape, and we have to be honest with ourselves, we have to fix those things. And that's just where this league is.

"And it's not OK. It's not OK to lose like that. And I'm not a big fan of sitting here and telling everybody, guys, it's OK. No. No, you don't just lose like that, and it's OK. What it is, man, is you go back to work. You start to fix those problems that you saw on tape, and you move on to the next week, and that's what we're going to do."

Glenn said that on-field work will begin in practice on Wednesday ahead of next Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, the Jets' first of two to be played in Florida before the Monday night game at Miami on Sept. 29.

At this point, with Sunday's game still fresh, the status of QB Justin Fields, who left the game in the fourth quarter after taking a blow to the head from Bills (2-0) DE Joey Bosa, is unknown. Fields, who was 3-of-11 passing for 27 yards and ran 5 times for a team-leading 49 yards, was evaluated on the sideline and then taken to the locker room for additional examination. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor finished the game, leading the Jets on a TD drive with a 5-yard pass to TE Jeremy Ruckert, the first TD reception of his NFL career.

"Justin is in the concussion protocol," Glenn said. "So when it comes to injuries, that's what we've got."

He then critiqued a game in which the Jets committed three penalties that gave Buffalo critical first downs early in the game, an offense that was limited to 100 yards rushing and that failed to pick up a first down on 11 tries facing a third down.

"When it comes to this game, very disappointing, like very disappointing, all three phases," Glenn said. "To be honest with you, not just the players. First off, I got to take a look at myself. I want to take a look at every player. I want to take a look at every coach, right?

"There's no stone that won't go unturned without figuring out the issue. But I do know this ... I told these guys I've been here before with two teams, in New Orleans and Detroit. The one thing that we're not going to do, we're not going to waver one bit, not one bit. The brand that we say that we're going to play right we're going to play that type of game right now. Our guys will get better. The only thing we have to do is get ready to go back to work right on Wednesday, and we'll go from there. I do know that."

Buffalo owned nearly every statistical category: 38:21 to 21:39 in time of possession; 25 to 11 in first downs; 403 to 154 total yards; 71 to 47 in offensive plays.

"They kept the ball and we didn't keep the ball. It's just that simple," he said.

After rushing the ball for nearly 200 yards last week against Pittsburgh, Glenn said that Buffalo was committed to stopping the Jets ground attack.

"They did a really good job of stopping the run. They have a number of good coaches over there, so whatever they did last week, they fixed their problem," Glenn said, referring to Baltimore running for 238 yards against the Bills in Week 1. "That's what we have to do. That's what it comes down to."
