The New York Jets announced today that Kevin Shippos of Massapequa High School in Massapequa, NY, has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week award presented by Chase. Through Chase's partnership, the monetary award to benefit the school's football program has doubled to $2,000. Coach Shippos will be presented with a certificate and award ball. In addition, he is invited to watch the New York Jets play the Buffalo Bills on January 1st in Chase's suite at MetLife Stadium.
In its 21st year, the Coach of the Week award is given to a coach in the tri-state area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Shippos is a 1997 graduate of Baldwin High School in Baldwin, NY, where he started at fullback, linebacker, kicker and punter, twice earning all-county honors. As a senior, Shippos was given the Golden 11 Scholar Athlete Award by the National Football Foundation. Coach Shippos was also a preeminent wrestler, as he earned the New York state title and National High School Wrestling Championship for heavyweights. Upon graduating, Shippos attended Penn State University, where he received a wrestling scholarship. Shippos is in his 11th season coaching at Massapequa, with six years as head coach of the program. In addition to his coaching duties, Shippos serves as an assistant coach for the varsity wrestling team and physical education teacher for two elementary schools in the district.
On Saturday, October 15th, the Massapequa Chiefs beat the Baldwin Bruins, 21-20, raising their record to 5-1 for the season. Their next game will be on the road against the Plainview-Old Page Bethpage JFK Hawks on Saturday, October 22nd at 2:00 P.M.
