With free agency and the NFL Draft looming, HC Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey are preparing to bolster the Jets' roster ahead of the 2026 season.
That process began at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last week, where ESPN's Ben Solak and Senior NFL Insider Ian Rapoport shared their perspectives on some critical moves the Jets could make in the coming weeks and months.
"I think a lot of people are expecting this huge, flashy offseason," Rapoport said. "I wonder about that because that's not really what the Jets need. … I could see them rebuilding with a lot of mid to upper tier free agents."
According to Solak, that build could begin with examining the status of things up front. The Jets were battered by injury throughout the 2025 season, however, the offensive line was the definition of consistency. The same five players -- LT Olu Fashanu, LG John Simpson, C Josh Myers, RG Joe Tippmann and RT Armand Membou -- lined up for all 17 games, marking the first time since 2012 that the team started the same OL all season.
That came after G Alijah Vera-Tucker sustained a season-ending injury ahead of Week 1. Vera-Tucker and Simpson are both set to become free agents, while Myers signed a contract extension in December.
"I think free agency is the spot where you can be pretty successful plugging and chugging some of these interior players," said Solak, who also spoke about the value of re-signing Vera-Tucker or Simpson. "I thought the line's continuity, I thought the play of the tackles, I thought the line overall was quite strong last year. And running-game wise, you saw that bear some fruit in games where they were able to keep the scores competitive and stay in that running game for three, four quarters."
He added: "I really liked what they had on the line, I would hope they continue to address that seriously."
According to Rapoport, the Jets could benefit from an offseason dedicated to adding depth rather than focusing on headline-making moves. He pointed to the Commanders' offseason two years ago as a template the Green & White could follow to bring in a multitude of dependable players.
"They signed like 12 guys, they were all making mid to upper tier free agent, but not the blockbusters," he said, referring to Washington. "They basically just rebuilt the roster with free agents taking the place of draft picks, essentially. I could see that kind of offseason from the Jets. I'm sure there will be some splash, maybe a quarterback. I like the idea [of it] … you can get some good players."
Mougey and Glenn have spoken about the importance of injecting veteran presence into the locker room via free agency. The significant draft capital the team holds in April, however, cannot be overlooked. The team currently has two first-round selections, including the No. 2 overall pick.
"The way that Darren Mougey and his staff handled this season was so interesting," Rapoport said, highlighting the Jets' two blockbuster trades on deadline day in November. "… Those were your most valuable assets. If you're going to restart, you're going to rebuild, and you have to do it through the draft, what's the most you can get? They got the most they could get."
Solak stressed that the Jets have several ways they can use the capital to their benefit, whether it be trading back a few spots or selecting an elite talent at No. 2.
"There's a thick group from two to six or two to seven," Solak said, naming prospects such as edges Arvell Reese, David Bailey and Rueben Bain Jr., as well as LB Sonny Styles and S Caleb Downs.
"If you're making me make the [No. 2] pick, I'm probably taking Caleb Downs," he said. "That's the player I like the most, I have graded the highest. I understand, safety vs. edge rusher. A good player is a good player. … This guy is a franchise-changing individual. He's going to create turnovers for you."
In addition to two first-round selections, the Jets also hold the first pick in the second round of this year's draft. Looking ahead, the Jets hold three first-round selections in 2027.
Mougey has spoken about employing an aggressive and calculated approach throughout free agency and the draft. Beginning next week, the Jets can start to lay the foundation for immediate success that folds into the team's long-term vision.
