Entering his fourth professional campaign, RB Breece Hall has embraced several changes to the Jets including the early practice starts at training camp.
"Practicing in the morning, we like that a lot more than practicing at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. and it's 90 degrees already so that's a lot nicer," Hall told reporters Saturday. "I like the way practice, just the whole operation throughout the day, is run. Coach (Aaron) Glenn has done a great job of not only being a player's coach but making sure we get the right amount of work in too, so it's been cool to see how he goes about his business and the standard he sets for everybody. For me, it makes me want to come in everyday and do my 1/11 every time I'm out on the field."
Last season, Hall led the Green & White with 1,359 yards (876 rushing and 483 receiving) and 8 TDs. But the Jets encountered a ton of adversity as they made in-season changes at head coach, offensive coordinator, and general manager. The Jets embarked on a new course in January with Glenn and GM Darren Mougey and Hall says players have fully committed to the new direction.
"In the past there has been a lot of instability and stuff around the whole operation, but I feel like this year like I said everybody has bought into this coaching staff," he said. "Everybody's bought into our GM. Everybody's bought into our owners too, so it feels a lot better coming in here every day."
Hall likes Glenn's direct communication with players. A first-round pick of the Jets in 1994, Glenn, who played 15 seasons in the NFL and is in his 29th training camp overall, has experienced the game as a player, a scout and an assistant coach and coordinator.
"I just like the way he communicates," Hall said. "It's not passive, it's very to the point. He tells you what he needs from you, how he wants things done, and he doesn't sugarcoat anything because he's played before. He knows what we're going through, what we've been through, so it's cool to see how he goes about his business, how he treats everybody, how he acknowledges everything and everyone. Like I said he's very straight and to the point. I like how he wants to just work, let us go home and that's the coolest thing."
Hall, who's averaged 4.6 yards a carry and 32.3 receiving yards over 40 pro games, is in the final year of his contract. After the Jets locked up stars Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner to extensions prior to camp, Hall was asked today if he expects a new deal.
"I'm not really expecting it before this season. We got a new head coach, a new GM and obviously I wasn't drafted by them. I'm not their guy so for me like I said I got to prove it every day. I think for me I got a chip on my shoulder – I feel like okay it's my last chance. For me it's always been he's got potential, he's got potential, but I want to be the product. So now it's all just about putting my head down and working, so I feel like I don't want to discuss all the other stuff. For me, I just try to worry about ball right now."
