Notebook | Jets HC Aaron Glenn: 'We're Trying to Build a Solid Foundation'

DL Harrison Phillips: ‘We Need Everyone to Buy In’

Jets HC Aaron Glenn has often spoken about coping with his teams' winless starts to seasons -- past and present -- either as a player, an assistant coach and now the boss.

As a player for the Green & White in 1996, Glenn endured an 0-8 start to a 1-15 season. As an assistant to Dan Campbell in his first season in Detroit, the Lions started 0-10-1. A couple of other accomplished coaches also dealt with losses early in their tenures as they built foundations -- Kyle Shanahan in 2017 with San Francisco, 0-9; and Zac Taylor with Cincinnati in 2010, 0-11.

Now in his first season as the Jets' top man, the team's 0-6 start is far from optimal, yet Glenn is steadfast in his belief that better days are ahead.

"Everybody wants to make sure they have a winning record," Glenn said. "But here's the thing that was not heard from the very beginning. We're not talking about the Super Bowl. We're trying to build a foundation of making sure that we win consistently. And how do you do that? You just can't throw things out there and just have an unstable foundation and expect for things to be just right and to consistently win."

He added: "No one wants to go through the hard stuff, and that's what we're going through right now. We're going through the hard times to put ourselves in position to win. So I have all the confidence in the world, in this team. I have all the confidence in the world in these coaches. I have confidence in myself, and I'm not going to waver one bit. Not one bit. There's a number of coaches I've talked to that's been in this situation. I talked to Bill [Parcells] this morning.

"So you have to go through these times, you have to figure out exactly how you're going to end up winning games, and continue to press. And I'm not [going] away from that. I've been through that with Detroit. I've been through that in New Orleans. And listen, I'm not going away from it all, and I understand how it looks on the outside, and the thing is, I told you guys [reporters], and I told the fans, do not let go of the rope. The thing I know we're doing is we're trying to build a solid foundation so we can consistently try to win."

DL Harrison Phillips: 'You Need to Lean In Harder'
When the Jets made a trade with Minnesota for Harrison Phillips, they acquired an accomplished 8-year veteran, but they also brought aboard a player who has experience in rebuilds, with the Bills and then with the Vikings.

"I've been a part of a few rebuild or rebranding in my career," Phillips said. "I believe in AG, and so I know what this can look like, but I do think it's really good for our young players to have the messaging and to see this is the blueprint. It started out like this, and look at what it turned into.

"And so for young players on the roster who don't know how this goes or can go, I think it is great to keep them locked in, keep them dialed in. ... But from the NIL [Name, Image, Likeness] landscape where if you're on a bad [college] team and you were a good player, maybe you just transfer out. No, we need everybody to buy in. You need to lean in harder in a time like this."

C Josh Myers on QB Justin Fields: 'He's Seen Adversity'
Center Josh Myers spent two seasons (2019-20) at Ohio State in close proximity to QB Justin Fields. They each had stellar seasons in 2020: Myers was named First-Team All-Big Ten and Fields was the conference MVP.

Now, after Myers' four seasons with Green Bay and Fields' journey from Chicago to Pittsburgh to Florham Park, the two are reunited. And Myers is convinced his former and current teammate will bounce back from a difficult outing against Denver in London on Sunday.

"He's fine," Myers said. "I've played a lot of snaps with him before, and he's an amazing football player, leader, quarterback ... all those things. I think we have to do a better job around him. Just speaking for the offensive line, got to give him time and let him get through his reads and do all that stuff. So I think he's fine. I think he's going to be fine. He's seen adversity, and I think you'll see a bounce back performance from him."
