Coach of the Week: Scott Benoit, Hamden

The New York Jets announced today that Scott Benoit of Hamden High School in Hamden, Conn., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Benoit will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program, and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.

The award, in its 13th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.

Benoit is at the helm of his third high school football program. He previously coached Guilford High School from 2005-07 and North Branford High School from 1997-2001, leading the Thunderbirds to the finals in the Class S Division in '01. The West Haven alumnus, class of '83, works in the human resources department of Covidien Surgical Devices.

Last weekend Hamden defeated the Shelton Gaels, 35-30, to improve their record to 5-0, surpassing their total of four wins in the previous three seasons combined. Up next, the Green Dragons will face the Branford Hornets on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m.
