If Aaron Glenn was suffering from sleep deprivation, it was hard to tell. Or maybe it was easy, since he was fairly pumped up after presiding over his first training camp practice as Jets head coach.
Either way, AG on Wednesday was already in the middle of a long day when he addressed reporters at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center shortly after practice ended around 10 a.m.
"I think I woke up around 3:30 this morning," Glenn said, with just the hint of the sound of a kid on Christmas morning. "My wife texted me around 2:30, and like she always does: 'Just be AG.' That's whom I'm going to be, right, wrong or indifferent. Nothing's going to change about how I operate, about how I think.
"But I was excited so when I woke up at that time, I didn't go back to sleep. And I don't think I'll get back to sleep anytime soon now, because we have this whole day where we've got a lot of things to get done. So I'm looking forward to every part, every minute, every hour of what we have going on today, because this is a day of teaching, and I want to make sure I go through that the right way."
Glenn said this day was one he's been "waiting on for a long time." Even though he was appointed as the Jets HC in January — almost 31 years since he was selected by the Green & White in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft — and had gone through the free agency process, the draft, the offseason strength and conditioning program, the rookie and full-squad minicamps and on into the just-concluded dark period on the NFL calendar, the eagerness that he had for July 23 and beyond never wore off.
"As a head coach, I've always known that there's no such thing as downtime," he said. "You're always thinking about what can you do to protect the players, to help the players to help your staff, what can you do as far as the organization is concerned to make things better.
"So there's no downtime, but there was some time to spend with my wife and my kids and I made sure I did that. And then also just some self-help talking to other coaches, seeing how they operated, how they did things. So it was a really good offseason, a really good five weeks."
And now the really hard work for all coaches, players, staff, and yes, even fans, begins. The first few days of camp the players will be in helmets, shirts and shorts before donning the pads, but important work has already begun.
"We have something we're trying to create," Glenn said. "I'm not going to end up talking about what those things are, but every day that's the focus. Nothing else, take everything out, focus on that. Obviously we have a playbook that we have to get going. But our guys know it's not just about the playbook, it's about the play style. Our guys understand that."
That's not to say that the Jets are oblivious to the ultimate goal for them and everyone else in the league, which is to win a Super Bowl. Glenn addressed the topic during Tuesday's report-day team meeting, but he put that shining silver trophy in its proper perspective for his new charges.
"This is a one-day mentality for us," he said. "My message to the players — and don't take this the wrong way because I usually don't talk about everything that I talk to the players about — but they understand the expectations, like everybody else, is to win the Super Bowl. We got it.
"But we break those expectations down in stages, so the only thing I want those guys to think about is what we're trying to create in training camp, and that's what we talked about yesterday for the most part. We understand the Super Bowl's down the line, that's the overall goal, but man, the expectation of training camp is that we're trying to create certain things. That's what we're after right now."
Sometime Wednesday night, after the final meeting of the long day, Glenn will hit the rack, get his four hours (if he's lucky), then wake up for Day 2 of a very long season ahead. And AG seems to be the kind of guy who will enjoy every hour, every minute of it.
