Entering his fourth season with the Green & White on the heels of a new contract extension, star receiver Garrett Wilson believes there is no time to waste in 2025.
"Ideally, we are rolling by Week 1," Wilson said of the Jets' offense. … "We've got to find a way to be playing good football and executing by Week 1. The beautiful thing about that is we've still got five to six weeks to figure that out and make that happen. But yeah, that's the goal. If we go into it trying to give ourselves that leeway in Week 1, then all of sudden it might be Week 8. Week 1 is the deadline. We have to be rolling."
Just one week into training camp, Wilson is confident his unit is preparing the right way. It's no secret that first-year HC Aaron Glenn has emphasized competition and physicality since his arrival, and Wilson has welcomed the culture change.
"[It's] not just talking about being competitive, you've got to train that way," Wilson said. … "It's practice, yes, but there is an opportunity to practice winning and get that feeling and what it takes to just do it right on a consistent basis. I think it starts out here. That's something that I love to be a part of."
Although there have been some inevitable ups and downs as the revamped offense continues to learn a new scheme under a new coaching staff, Wilson knows this is the time of year to iron out the details -- and he is confident his unit is exactly where it needs to be.
"We are going to keep building this chemistry," Wilson said. "Building up exactly where we are supposed to be when we are supposed to be there."
With new terminology learned and the adjustment period now behind him, Wilson has turned his attention to playing faster and mastering details, especially when it comes to his route running.
"This is a very timing, spot predicated league, and the defenses all drop and adjust based on what they have seen for hundreds of years with offenses," Wilson said. "With that, it's been my job since my first day in this league to always balance that with what I'm being asked to do and what the quarterback is expecting me to do."
After recording three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and a career-high 7 TDs in 2024, Wilson will continue to be integral part of the Jets' offensive attack. However, he knows his performance will only be one piece of the puzzle.
"I think [this offense] can be explosive," he said. "It's something that can be very complementary. The better we can run the ball, especially with the running backs we've got and Justin [Fields'] ability to run the ball and Tyrod [Taylor's]. The more push we can get, the more we can run the ball on second and short and convert. That stuff is just going to open up everything for us."
As training camp presses on, Wilson and his teammates will continue to prepare for the Week 1 deadline.
"As a receiving room, we are really excited to just see how this thing progresses, see how it all complements each other," Wilson said. "And by the time we get into the season, hopefully we are rolling, and you all can see that too."
