Quincy Enunwa Likely Out 6-9 Months

Wideout Has Bulging Disc in Neck, Expected to Miss 2017 Campaign

After a day off, the Jets resumed practice Monday afternoon in Florham Park, NJ. Rain moved the team inside their fieldhouse and WR Quincy Enunwa, who suffered a neck injury, was nowhere to be found. And for the foreseeable future, the Green & White will continue to operate without Enunwa

"He has a bulging disc in his neck. Barring a second opinion, he's probably going to have to get surgery," head coach Todd Bowles told reporters. "So he'll be out about 6-9 months."

The 6'2", 225-pound Enunwa, who set career highs last season with 58 receptions and 857 yards receiving, was bothered by a sore neck in the spring. He came back to camp healthy, but he fell during a 7-on-7 drill Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.

"He underwent tests and he had treatment and he was doing better," Bowles said. "He was doing fine and when he fell, it just flared up again."

"It's unfortunate, but that just means the rest of the team has to rally together and bond together and keep going," added ILB Darron Lee.

Speedster Robby Anderson, who averaged 14 yards on 42 receptions his rookie year, becomes the de facto No. 1 receiver. The Jets also have second-year players Charone Peake (19 receptions in 2016) and Jalin Marshall (14 catches his rookie campaign), but the latter will serve a four-game suspension at the beginning of the regular season. Rookies ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hansen are starting to see more action in team drills and third-year veteran Chris Harper has had an impressive camp. Excluding Enunwa, there are 12 receivers on the roster.

"They have to get some experience and they have to get some reps, but they're talented," Bowles said of his group that includes former Cowboys WR-KR Lucky Whitehead. "They just have to learn and get them caught up to speed."

The Jets will look at what wide receivers are available, but Bowles indicated they could elect to stand pat.

"We have a lot of young guys that we're trying to develop. If there's something out there that catches our eye, we'll sign them," he said. "If not, we'll stay with the guys that we have. But all options are open."

With the emergence of Austin-Seferian Jenkins and a West Coast offensive system, the Jets will use the tight ends more in 2017 as well. But after losing one of their better players to injury, they will have to find a way to adjust quickly.

"It's definitely going to hurt us, having a guy with his talent go out like that but it's an opportunity for the next guy to step up. Football's a difficult game," said rookie TE Jordan Leggett.

"You take body blows in this league. Whether he broke a leg or sprained an ankle, if you lose a player like that, guys still have to step up," Bowles said. "There are going to be body blows and injuries throughout this league when the season starts, so we just have to have the next guy step up and we have to coach them."

Et CeteraRookie S Jamal Adams, who sprained his ankle last week, returned to action in team drills… Christian Hackenberg got in some late work with the first offensive line. The QB rotation stayed mostly the same and Bowles said the staff has yet to talk about a starter for Saturday's preseason opener vs. the Titans… RB Bilal Powell was held out of practice with a sore neck. Powell had the wind knocked out of him during Friday's workout and he did not participate in Saturday's Green & White practice. * *Fellow back Matt Forte worked to the side with the strength staff and remains day-to-day with the hamstring… OLB Lorenzo Mauldin (back) was also on the sidelines today… The defense unleashed a number of pressure packages at the offense and they had the better of the action when the offense went to the passing attack. But Bowles was happy with what he saw out of the run game.
