Word is filtering out that rookie Mark Sanchez has been named the Jets' starting quarterback for opening day, Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Jets open their Rex Ryan era against the Texans at Houston.

ESPN1050 New York and SNY are both reporting today that Ryan met with both quarterbacks this morning and told them that the decision has been made that Sanchez has gotten the starting nod over fourth-year veteran Kellen Clemens.

Sanchez was the fifth overall selection in the April draft. He and Clemens began their quarterback competition shortly after and have been at it into the first two preseason games.

Ryan will talk about his quarterback decision and other Jets matters with reporters after today's open practice at about 2 p.m. That news conference will be streamed live on newyorkjets.com. Ryan will also be interviewed on ESPN1050 at 5 p.m. today.
