GENO: We Will Stay Together

Transcript of QB Geno Smith's Monday afternoon news conference.

**

On the feeling around the team today…**

We got guys in here, once again, as we do every week. Everyone is coming in with the same mentality, that's to get better. We were very hard on ourselves today, as an offense and as a team. We looked at things to improve on and we're going out and practicing with the same mentality as we always do, to get better and to improve.

On the improvements that need to be made over the next couple of weeks…

I think everything in general. As far as myself, just being better with my eyes and feet, making better throws, just putting us in better situations as the quarterback.

On if he felt if he was having one of his better games before he threw the interception…

I wasn't thinking about it. Obviously, the pick-six hurt us, it was very detrimental. I really wasn't thinking about it, I just went out and competed. I tried to compete every single snap as hard as I could. For the most part, we did some good things, but overall we had some negatives that ended up biting us in the butt.

On what the team did well…

We were pretty good on third downs. I thought we ran the ball well against one of the better run defenses. Overall, I think we were pretty precise. Marty [Mornhinweg] called a great game. There were plenty of opportunities there in the passing game. I think if I complete a few of those passes and make some better throws, we're in a better position.

On if watching the film confirmed that he should have not thrown the ball on the interception…

Yes, I should have checked it down. It was not a smart decision and something I have to learn from.

On what else looked different on tape…

I don't really know what could be different other than the fact that we have to improve on every single thing in all areas. That goes for every single guy in this locker room.

On if he had talked to Coach Ryan about how he felt that he let him down…

No, I didn't. It's just how I feel. I feel like that every loss. I feel if I don't perform up to the standards that I set for myself and that are set by this team's expectations and goals, that I let everyone down.

On if the team feels like they are playing for Coach Ryan's job…

No, we don't. We're going out there and playing for Rex because he's our head coach and we want to play hard for him and we want to win games for him. He coaches us hard, he puts the time and effort in, and he deserves for our team to go out and that's what we do every single week.

On if he wants Coach Ryan to return next season…

I love Rex and despite what decision is made, my feelings for him will never change.

On how much he has proven that he should be the starting quarterback…

Well, I'm not trying to prove that to the media, that's for one. Everything that's within this locker room is in this locker room.

On if he has proven to the front office that he should be the starting quarterback…

We'll see.

On if he has met his own expectations…

No, I haven't. I think I could have played a lot better. I obviously understand there are growing pains you have to learn from and experiences you have to get better from. I set the bar high for myself, I always will. That's the way I'll improve, by setting that bar high and keep climbing.

On if playing in the NFL is harder than he thought it would be…

I don't think so. It's always going to be hard at any level. The quarterback position is one of the, if not the toughest, positions in all of sports. I fully expect it to be hard and I don't take it lightly. It's just about continuing to progress, continuing to get better and going out and competing every single week.

On if he expects a quarterback competition next preseason…

Yes I do. I'm going to be in full competition with myself and every other guy who's in camp.

On if he had expected to make more strides since the bye week...

You can't really speak hypothetically; I understand that's your job. The game is the game, you have to go out there and play the game. Talking about it is not getting it done. It's just all about going there and playing and showing effort and then it comes down to execution.

On if he feels more comfortable running the ball…

I have always felt comfortable with it, I just think now I'm more decisive. I'm seeing things better, I'm seeing lanes better, knowing when the opportunity is there. I still think I can do a better job, maybe making guys miss down field, doing something else to kind of juice it up a little, give us an extra spark that I think we can all use.

On how important it is the team stays together and finishes the season strong…

It's vital. One thing I do know is that we will, we will stay together. That's been the team we've been all year long. We're a close-knit bunch, we fight for one another. I don't see any problems with that.
