38 Members Named to 2010 Flight Crew

The Jets might have to adhere to roster limits, but Jets Nation can breathe easier knowing that Flight Crew director Denise Garvey is under no such restrictions.

Garvey, who's been the head of the Jets' cheerleaders since their 2007 inception, will lead a group of 38 young ladies — 22 veterans and 16 rookies — next season at "The Home of the Jets." That announcement took place on Saturday at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center as an original list of 304 preliminary candidates was pared down to 118 on May 1 and then 60 survived the semifinals on May 2.

"Everything about the Jets is exciting in 2010 and the Flight Crew Cheerleaders are no exception! We are the biggest squad in the area," Garvey said after she made her final picks with the assistance of a celebrity panel consisting of tight end Dustin Keller, "Basketball Wives" star Jennifer Williams and announcer Steve Overmyer.

"The talent, beauty and overall showmanship were unmatched in prior years. This is New York, and in the New York market, when you look for someone who has everything, you can find it!"

The Flight Crew's 2010 finalists came from New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and Staten Island. But they also hailed from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, Tennessee and Japan. It was truly a global process as Garvey's team, with an age range of 18-30, promises to be bigger and better than ever.

In the days preceding the finals, Garvey brought in the 60 finalists to the Jets' Florham Park, N.J., facility. It was important for her to see the young ladies not only in a dance setting but in a more relaxed manner to determine if they would be a good fit for team appearances and events and media/TV opportunities. Then on Saturday, the girls got their chance to perform solo routines in the morning before moving to a dance choreography and kick combination they had learned the week before.

"I am excited about the new squad. The young women will enter a training camp that begins on May 25 and concludes with the first preseason game [against the Giants on Monday, Aug. 16]," Garvey said. "They are about to embark on a very exciting year in their lives. They will be the first group of cheerleaders to step foot on the turf at the Home of the Jets."
