3 Takeaways | Jets WR Arian Smith and TE Jeremy Ruckert Make Plays Late vs. Bills

HC Aaron Glenn Says Time of Possession ‘a Huge Part’ of Sunday’s Loss

The Jets were defeated, 30-10, by the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 at MetLife Stadium. Here are three takeaways from Sunday's the game.

A Pair of Firsts for Two Pass Catchers

Though the Jets did not have the offensive performance they had hoped for Sunday, rookie WR Arian Smith and TE Jeremy Ruckert both got involved during the Jets' lone touchdown drive. QB Tyrod Taylor entered the game with just over 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after QB Justin Fields sustained a head injury on the previous drive.

Facing a fourth-and-2, Taylor found Smith for an 8-yard gain and first down.

"It was great," Smith said of his first NFL catch. "I wish I would've gotten more to help the team win, but it was a great feeling, of course. … Definitely gives me a confidence boost. I know I can go out there and make plays against those good guys."

Taylor capped off the 10-play, 54-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to TE Jeremy Ruckert -- the first score of the Long Island native's pro career.

"I was just trying to tell the guys, whatever the score is every time you go on that field, the tape doesn't lie," Ruckert said. … "Every opportunity you get to go out there and make the most of it, stick together and play the style that you want to be seen when they cut that tape. Obviously, it was a blessing to get in there. Get in there and show everybody that there's no quit, there's fight and every time you get out there is a blessing."

Bills Dominate Time of Possession

HC Aaron Glenn pointed to time of possession as a major area for improvement following Sunday's loss. The Bills had the ball for 38:21, while the Jets' offense held the ball for just 21:39 .

"They kept the ball longer than we did," Glenn said. "We didn't keep the ball at all. So that was a huge part of what happened."

The Bills had 71 offensive plays to the Jets' 47, and Buffalo outgained the Green & White 403 yards to 154. The Jets also struggled to sustain drives -- the offense was unable to convert on 11 third-down attempts.

"We didn't get a rhythm on offense, and that was hard on all of us out there," WR Garrett Wilson said. "We didn't do a good job of helping him [QB Justin Fields]. … We've all got to do our part, and that starts with all of us in the receiver room making plays and getting this thing rolling as soon as we get out on the field."

Despite what Glenn labeled as a "disappointing" performance, the head coach has the utmost confidence his team will get back to work and find a way to respond ahead of the Week 3 game at Tampa Bay.

"The one thing we're not going to do -- we're not going to waver, not one bit," Glenn said. "Not one bit. The brand that we say that we're going to play, we're going to play that type of game. And our guys will get better. The only thing we have to do is get ready to go back to work on Wednesday and we'll go from there. I do know that."

Isaiah Williams, Isaiah Davis Get KR/PR Reps

The Jets entered their Week 2 matchup with some uncertainty at the returner position. The Green & White released WR Xavier Gipson last week, and RB Kene Nwangwu was inactive for Sunday's contest after sustaining an injury in Week 1.

The Jets utilized RB Isaiah Davis and WR Isaiah Williams in the game. Davis returned 5 kicks and averaged 26.8 yards per return. His longest return of the day went for 33 yards. Williams, who joined the Jets this week, returned 2 kicks for 40 yards. He also returned a punt for 11 yards.
