Jets QB Justin Fields: 'Everything Happens for a Reason'

HC Aaron Glenn Keeping His Options Open at QB Ahead of Week 8 Game

From where he stands, in the calm eye of a hurricane, Jets QB Justin Fields said on Wednesday that whether he -- or veteran Tyrod Taylor -- starts on Sunday at Cincinnati, the yet-to-be made decision is up to HC Aaron Glenn.

"I actually don't know," Fields said. "That's a question for AG."

And as Glenn said earlier before the Jets' first practice of the week, he's not about to tip his hand to the Bengals and allow them a chance to tailor their preparation.

Glenn's decision to replace Fields with Taylor at halftime of last week's 13-6 loss to Carolina, the Jets' seventh-straight loss to start the season, has put Fields on the spot. And the fifth-year player knows it.

"I need to play better. We need to play better as a team," he said. "And of course no matter how the offense does as a unit I'm going to get the blame. And I understand that. That's just what comes with the job." He added: "Sometimes there's going to be times where you have to be the only one who believes in yourself."

As he and his teammates deal with the challenge of getting on track, Fields, who signed in free agency with the Jets after a season in Pittsburgh, said his teammates have been nothing but supportive.

"I'm actually at peace as much as I am," he said. "I have great teammates, great people in this locker room. And they've checked up on me because they probably see the stuff that's online. I don't see anything [he doesn't engage in social media he said]. They've checked up on me a lot, and I appreciate that. And I told them I'm good. And then some of them double back. Like, 'Oh, you are. Are you actually good?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I'm solid, bro.' "

The Jets' offense has not scored a touchdown in the past two games, even as the defense has come together and held first Denver and then Carolina to 13 points each. The offense has scored 7 TDs in the past six games, and through seven games the Green & White has lost five times by 7 points or fewer.

And whatever the issues Fields has confronted, the offense as a unit has been inconsistent. The offensive line has allowed 17 sacks of Fields in the past three games. WR Garrett Wilson sat out against the Panthers with a knee injury, and Jets' other receivers (perhaps other than rookie TE Mason Taylor) have yet to make a consistent impact. And the run game has largely been stymied as the opposition packs the box, challenging the Jets to throw the ball.

"Everything around me can, quote, unquote, be negative in terms of the world, but I promise you, there's nothing in this world that can faze me, and that's just due to my relationship with the Lord," he said. "It's not [just] on me. I feel like if it's just me, yeah, I'm sick to my stomach right now. But everything happens for a reason. I've been through trials, I've been through tribulations, and I've learned that everything happens for a reason. So like I said, I'm not stressed whatsoever."

Over his six starts this season [he sat out the game against Tampa Bay while in the concussion protocol], Fields has passed for 845 yards (63.7%) with 4 TDs and 0 INTs. He also averaged 42.8 yards per game rushing and 3 has rush TDs. His 257 rush yards leads all NFL QBs.
