During the Jets' first open practice, the focus turned to situational football -- with an emphasis on red zone action followed by a two-minute drill to end practice.
"I thought our guys did a really good job understanding exactly what we're trying to do," HC Aaron Glenn said. "For the most part, I thought we operated the way I wanted to operate. Listen, there were some issues here and there -- but we'll get those cleaned up."
There were plenty of highlight-worthy moments on both sides of the ball. During 7-on-7 work, quarterback Tyrod Taylor connected with Mason Taylor for a diving touchdown catch. The impressive grab was one of many strong plays made by the rookie tight end on Friday.
"There's nothing different than what we saw when it came to what we saw in college," Glenn said of Mason Taylor. "I told you guys from the beginning, the thing that impresses me about him is his ability to block. So, the receiving skills -- that doesn't surprise me. His blocking, I know he can block, but I didn't think he was going to be this good. So, I'm excited to see how he matures when it comes to camp and how we want to do things as far as that is concerned."
During the two-minute drill, Tyrod Taylor did well moving the ball into scoring territory, connecting with wide receiver Garrett Wilson on multiple occasions. Facing a 10-7 deficit in an end-of-half situation, the offense was inside the 10-yard-line with just under 30 seconds remaining. But safety Andre Cisco ended the drill in dramatic fashion, intercepting Taylor's pass intended for receiver Tyler Johnson in the end zone.
"That's teaching on both parts. … I thought Tyrod did a hell of a job actually driving the guys down, and the guys understanding that situation," Glenn said. … "I thought both sides understood the situation, operated like they wanted to. At the end of the half, Tyrod's got to make a better decision on that. He knows that."
The Jets offensive line leaned on the defensive line at times on the ground in the red zone as Breece Hall picked up a pair of TD runs.
"I'm excited," said LG John Simpson. "I'm really excited. I love running the ball, man, that's like my strong suit I think. So, I'm excited for the opportunity to come out here and just run the ball. All the other stuff will come, man, and I think if we can run the ball, we will win a lot of games."
Justin Fields Returns to Practice
Jets fans were happy to see Justin Fields take the field on Friday for warmups just one day after sustaining a dislocated toe during practice. He participated in stretching, but did not take reps in team periods. HC Aaron Glenn said that Fields will continue to be day -to -day, but his presence on the field was valuable for the team.
"It meant a lot to us," Tyrod Taylor said. "Obviously, him being on the field brings good energy to the team. He's one of our leaders. Him not being hurt for a long time is good news. Seeing him energized and back on the field ready to compete -- he would've [gone] today if it was up to him. That's the competitor he is. It was good to have him out there."
Fields is eager to get back to work as soon as possible, but Glenn said the team would make sure he's 100% before returning to live action.
"That's who Justin is," Glenn said. "I'd rather have a guy that I have to hold back then have to tell him to giddy up. He's built like that. He's a tough man. I expected that anyway. Once we understood and got the diagnosis, exactly what it was, I knew that was how he was going to operate."

Although the pads won't come on for the first time until Monday's practice, rookie Armand Membou continues to benefit from his reps against the wildly athletic Will McDonald IV. "Listen, you're not going to find too many guys with that type of ability -- as far as speed, agile and quickness -- to go against on a daily basis," Aaron Glenn said of McDonald. "And [Membou's] taking advantage of it on a daily basis. … Not only is Membou getting a chance to go against Will -- Will is going against a good guy, too."
Brady Cook had one of his stronger showings as a Jet, highlighted by touchdown passes to Dymere Miller and Malachi Corley. … Adrian Martinez connected with Xavier Gipson for a touchdown during 7-on-7. … Andre Cisco continued his strong camp performance with 2 interceptions, though one of the grabs was off a deflection, and the play may have been called back for pass interference. He added a PD of a Tyrod Taylor ball intended for Mason Taylor during the two-minute drill.
