One the day after trimming the Jets' roster to an initial group of 53, HC Aaron Glenn said training camp would officially close after Wednesday's practice. After a luncheon on Thursday, the players will be off until Monday, Labor Day, when they will jump into their final preparations for their regular-season opener against visiting Pittsburgh on Sept. 7.
Glenn addressed multiple topics in his nearly 10-minute session with reporters on Wednesday, which began with a kind of "who's on first" interplay.
"Good morning," Glenn said at a little past 1:30 p.m. "All right, that's why you guys didn't respond. All right, afternoon."
You can't blame the coach for a slight slip of the tongue. After all, it's been non-stop for him and his staff since Glenn was introduced as the Jets' 22nd head coach, back in January. Is there any burn out?
"And I've always said this because I get this question a lot. I mean, do I get burnt out?" he said. "You don't get burnt out on something that you love. So it's different for some people. Some people want to continue to look at their playbook and get going. Some people want to get away from it all. And I'm not going to judge anybody on how they operate. The thing is, once we get back Monday, we're getting ready to work."

The banter continued a few minutes later when AG was asked about his "plans at center," where Joe Tippmann and Josh Myers have been competing all summer.
"You'll start a center?"
Glenn's response: "Yep."
"Who is it?"
Glenn: "A center."
"How do you think the position battle played out over the course of the summer?"
Glenn: "Still playing out."
"Can you go right up until Thursday before game week without deciding?"
Glenn: "That'll be my decision." He added: "I mean, we're working against each other because we have a ton of time, all right, to get ready for Pittsburgh."
With waiver claims on Wednesday for LB Cam Jones (Chiefs), OT Esa Pole (Chiefs) and TE Jelani Woods (Colts), Glenn acknowledged that the situation is "fluid," a reference to the necessity to make room for the newest acquisitions.
"This is still a fluid process, we're going through a lot of things right now, but I like exactly how we handle this process," he said.

There were some hard decisions during the "process," AG said, one of which involved the cutting of rookie WR/KR Jamaal Pritchett and the retention of WR/KR Xavier Gipson.
"Listen, Pritchett did a really good job for us," Glenn said. "But there's more than just a preseason game that everybody sees. There's a ton of practice time that Gipson's done an outstanding job. We counted most of his reps as far as a punt returner, and I think he was 145 strong without dropping a punt and actually catching it the way that I see a punt returner should catch it. So I feel really confident with him. And man, he's dynamite when he gets an open field. So it's always hard when you come to these things. But man, there's more to it than just looking at that one game. There's a ton of practice time that you have to look at."
Against the Eagles, Pritchett, who was signed to the practice squad later int eh afternoon, turned heads when he caught 4 passes for 54 yards (13.5 average) and returned 3 punts for 63 yards (21 per).
While much, as Glenn said, remains "fluid" in terms of the roster and the practice squad, one of the things that is etched in stone is that Justin Fields is Glenn's quarterback. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. If there's a question (which there was) if the QB is an extension of the HC, Glenn was ready with a pointed response.
"When you say extension, I mean that's a term that can mean a lot of different things," Glenn said. "I do believe that the head coach-quarterback relationship has to be on point. I do believe that because you want to be wired a certain way, as far as how you think the game should be going, especially in game management situations, you have to be on the same page.
"There's a number of coaches like, I don't know if [Bill] Belichick and [Tom] Brady, I don't know if he was an extension, but the thing is, they understood each other, and to me I think more to that aspect than anything else. So me and Justin talk every day. He's in my office. You know, the majority of days that he's here now, we make sure that that relationship between me and him is on point, and we talk about football constantly. And to me, that means a lot to me. And you know, we're going to continue to grow that way."
