Following two seasons at Stanford working with quarterbacks and wide receivers, Matt Sargent joined the New York Jets staff as an offensive assistant, his first position in the NFL.

A graduate assistant at Stanford (2025), Sargent, working with then-interim Head Coach Frank Reich (2025), was part of the program's first year-over-year improvement since 2015, and the most wins by a Cardinal team since 2020.

In 2024, Sargent, working with the wide receivers, helped Elic Ayomanor to the program's first All‑ACC honor after he posted a career‑high 63 receptions and ranked sixth in the conference with 831 receiving yards.

In his first stint as a coach, Sargent served on staff in various roles at UCLA (2020-24) while earning his bachelor's degree. He began his tenure as a student manager (2020-21), before being elevated to an offensive undergraduate assistant (2022-23). Prior to joining the staff at Stanford, he spent time as an offensive analyst in the offseason following graduation (2024). In his time at UCLA, the Bruins had three winning seasons, garnering Top 25 recognition in each.

A Novato, CA native, Sargent earned his bachelor's degree in public affairs with an emphasis in economics from UCLA.
