Improvements on Special Teams, Defense Provide ‘Something to Build on’

Following a 13-11 loss to the Broncos in London, HC Aaron Glenn remains focused on building a foundation through consistent improvement.

"To consistently win, I do know this -- there has to be improvement," Glenn said. "And to me, I saw improvement within that game. Does that mean that we're going to go on this deal of winning every one of our games? No. But I know this -- it gives us a better chance to win. I know everybody wants to win, but nobody wants to go through the hard stuff, and that's what we're going through right now."

Ahead of the Week 6 matchup, Glenn acknowledged a need for progress defensively. The Jets seemed to find some answers on Sunday when the team limited the Broncos to 13 points and only allowed Denver to score a single TD.

After the Denver TD in the first quarter, the Jets did not allow another score until the game-winning FG in the fourth quarter. The team recorded its first takeaway, took the lead in the second half after a safety and did not allow a single passing yard in the third quarter. The stout performance came after the defense gathered for a players' only meeting last week.

"It looked really good when it came to how we want to play defense," Glenn said. "I give a lot of credit to [DC] Steve Wilks and that defensive staff, and those players. They got together and they wanted to do well and have a good showing. I will say this -- that is something for us to build on, and I'm looking forward to next week and seeing exactly how they're going to play."

Special teams provided another spark in the loss, and RB Kene Nwangwu's return to the lineup highlighted a strong performance for the unit. Nwangwu recorded a 72-yard kick return and teamed up with WR Arian Smith to down a 42-yard Austin McNamara punt at the Denver 2-yard line -- which resulted in a safety and 2 points for the Jets on the next play.

"Listen, I know it's tough being 0-6, but in the midst of that, when it comes to yesterday's game, there were a number of improvements that I want to make sure our guys understand that we are going to build on," Glenn said. "I thought our special teams did a hell of a job. Having Kene back as a kick returner, that definitely helped us."

Glenn, however, said the loss was "a tough pill to swallow" and acknowledged the need for offensive improvement after the unit "took a step back" on Sunday. As the Jets look to learn from the loss, Glenn stressed the importance of navigating early season struggles while keeping big picture goals in mind.

"I have all the confidence in the world in this team, I have all the confidence in the world in these coaches, I have confidence in myself, and I'm not going to waver one bit," he said. "You have to go through these times, you have to figure out exactly how you're going to end up winning games and continue to press forward on that. … The thing I know we're doing is we're trying to build a solid foundation so we can consistently try to win."
